Trump: NFL players who don't stand during Anthem maybe 'shouldn't be in the country'

https://www.cnn.com/2018/05/24/polit...hem/index.html

Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump praised NFL team owners for doing the "right thing" in requiring NFL players to stand during the National Anthem this season, and suggested those who don't stand maybe "shouldn't be in the country."

"You have to stand proudly for the National Anthem and the NFL owners did the right thing if that's what they've done," Trump said in an interview with Fox News that aired Thursday morning. Trump, who had been speaking at a roundtable on immigration when the policy was announced Wednesday, was informed of the new rule by "Fox & Friends" co-host Brian Kilmeade.

"You have to stand proudly for the National Anthem or you shouldn't be playing. You shouldn't be there. Maybe you shouldn't be in the country," Trump said.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced the new policy Wednesday, requiring players and personnel to stand for the National Anthem or face fines, though each team may develop its own work rules regarding those who do not comply with the policy. The new policy does give players the option to remain in the locker room during the playing of the anthem if they do not wish to comply.

"Well I think that's good," Trump told Fox News. "I don't think people should be staying in locker rooms. But still I think it's good."

Trump added that it's "something ideally could have been taken care of when it first started. That would have been a lot easier."

In 2016, Colin Kaepernick, a San Francisco 49ers quarterback at the time, drew national attention for refusing to stand during "The Star-Spangled Banner," saying he would not honor a song nor "show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color."

It led Trump to suggest during a rally last September that owners should fire their players for taking a knee during the anthem, inserting himself into a national controversy over race and the right to protest.

Asked if his voice prompted the NFL rule change, Trump credited "the people" rather than himself.

"I think the people pushed it forward. This was not me. I brought it out. I think the people pushed this forward," Trump said. "This country is very smart. We have very smart people."

CNN's Sophie Tatum, Jill Martin and Allie Malloy contributed to this report.

What's normal about the present day?

One thing that is very very generalized and creates an extremely tangential but relatively solid footing for my support of the current president, is that I disagree with the notion that the citizenry do and should funnel their entire existence through the federal government generally and the chief executive specifically. Many people decry the 'degradation of the office.' In many ways, I feel that the office SHOULD be degraded, . . . NOT that is should be abused, but that people should be DISabused of the notion that the office is a sanctified and infallible institution. It is and always has been a functionary institution with delineated duties carried out by human beings no greater or lesser than any other in the nation. This goes into a much longer narrative for how progressives supplant government for religion.

Normalizing comes about through individual everyday life. I'm tired of the notion that broadcast media and/or government either should be or is a vehicle for behavior patterning.

And the president is and rightly should be an individual, no more perfect or powerful than any other citizen, save the powers granted by office.

Pursuant to that, the measuring stick for his pronouncements should be accuracy, not the effect on institutions. If we're asking why the president is suggesting people who refuse to respect the anthem and flag might be comfortable elsewhere, we should also be asking why these people are refusing respect. If we're asking why the president is labelling the press an enemy, we should be also examining the evolution of the press.

No shit Sherlock but you are missing some important points here.

By % of police interaction a white person is more likely to be shot than a black person. That is a fact.

Not all but the vast majority of police interaction with people of color occurs in large urban and inner city areas.Thats not debatable so dont even try.

Every single one of those large urban areas are ran by Democrats and have been for 30 years, the same Democrats that are pushing the racial divide propaganda. The same Democrats that run the cities police departments.

The facts are there are very very very few unjustified shootings. If you want to ask why people of color are involved in so many justified police shootings look no further than where they live and who runs the cities.

If people of color really wanted to protest something they should focus on their local democrat leadership. Instead the spend all their time calling Trump, his supporters, and basically all white people racist.

Again, pushing this social racial divide agenda only benefits one party and they are the ones driving this bullshit narrative 100%.

The fact is its not an epidemic, its not systemic, and there is way more important shit to focus on like the fact unemployment is the lowest its EVER been for people of color and women.

Some form of the phrase "America: love it or leave it" has been around since the mid-1900s, and that's just the explicit saying. The application of its sentiment obviously goes back to the earliest days of the nation, as post-war loyalists discovered. So, to say that it's an unAmerican position isn't really opinion. It's an incorrect claim.

The comment about the president is just silly.

Good news!! The rules have changed regarding NFL player pregame anthem protocol. Rest easy, dispute averted.

Nah. Dissent is not unpatriotic. Squashing dissent is. And the POTUS of all people shouldn't be doing it.

Not to mention that Ms. Davis was not the acclaimed 'hero' that Lex posits. She was a pinchpoint on an issue that talking heads seized on to babble about for a while. It's not like there was a 'million court clerks march on Washington'

And even for those who supported her philosophically, most also supported both; her facing the legal consequence of her protest, and the legal processing she declined to do being effected by an amenable replacement.

You're about as wrong as is humanly possible, and switching from "A is unAmerican" to "B is not unpatriotic" is a semantic shell game. As I said

Hell, I only used post-war because that's really the point where the country was certain to remain a country. The sentiments and actions began before that.

Dissent is not patriotism. Dissent is dissent.

People fail at fulfilling ideals on a regular basis. That's not permission to abandon the ideal.
