Colin Kaepernick Is GQ's 2017 Citizen of the Year

What kind of Moron thought that was befitting? Let's pick a troublemaking protestor over someone who raised 37 million for hurricane relief

What is this brand new phenomenon of picking someone or something controversial to trigger reactions and buzz?

Not that I think he's deserving of the award, I just wonder why you said he was a "troublemaking" protester.
Actually Clay Travis is beating the drum about some gal who IS saying Kaep raped her. It might be an older story? I haven't followed it at all, just saw him tweeting about it. But some people are trying to keep it fresh apparently.

Also, why is that any worse than this, which happened way back in the 1930s? Yes, this was before he killed a bunch of Jews, but still...

So you are saying that Kapernick has a shirt with Hitler on it to match his one with Castro?

GQ is not Time, FWIW.

While I think JJ Watt is a reasonable selection as well, you could argue that while his humanitarian cause was phenomenal and surpassed everyone's expectations, Kaepernick has had a society-wide cultural impact that has rocked what everybody thought was the most powerful force in sports.

I think I would have chosen someone else outside of the NFL, but I think this selection is defensible.

What Kraperdick has done has not changed a damn thing or helped a single person.

All it has done is stir the debate on whether protesting the anthem is offensive or not which is not what his 'cause" is.

Though his foundation did donate $25,000 to a cop killers group.

It has gotten less men to watch a lot less football, which sounds like something GQ would be for.

There is no "I" in team.... unless the "I" is so very politically correct that the political LEFT thinks everyone on the team should be forced to agree with the "I."

Being a good teammate is putting your religion, ideology, and personal philosophy behind, and joining with others of different backgrounds to form a common bond of a "team" to play a sport.

Colin Kaepernick was a horrible teammate.

Colin put his views on the team logo, insisting that it was "racist" to disagree with him.

and then the "US" media rewards him over and over....

Football players with political views should start blogs and talk shows, and keep their views off the field and away from the TEAM LOGO.

It raised the issue of police brutality and unequal treatment in the justice system of African Americans.

That set off a political firestorm that swept across the NFL and even brought the ire of the President of the United States, and it is the very first thing we've seen have a legitimate risk to tank the NFL's popularity.

Not domestic violence.
Not systemic suppression of CTE evidence.
Not anything Goddell has done.

Nothing has tanked the popularity of the NFL, but the movement Kaepernick set in motion has an actual possibility to.

Has Kaepernick changed a single thing other then convince more athletes to kneel?

Has the guy even gone to senators to set up meetings to push ideas for what he is "fighting"?

Has a single open dialogue from a senator been opened on the floor of congress due to Kaepernick's influence?

Susan B. Anthony didn't change a single thing. The 19th amendment didn't come until that woman was six feet under.

Now, Kaepernick is no Anthony, but raising awareness doesn't need to have tangible policy results to be meaningful. We've spent more time talking about him and his movement and the unequal treatment of African Americans than we have gawking in wonder at what Watt did in Houston.

I don't think I would have picked Kaepernick myself, but I think he's a defensible selection for those reasons.
