RunKC Mock 3/2

Using some of Pests FA/signings info since I largely agree with him.

1. The Chiefs extend Alex Smith 5 years, $72m ($36m guaranteed) and S Eric Berry 6 years, $38m ($18m guaranteed).

2. The Chiefs restructure WR Dwayne Bowe and Tamba Hali's contracts.

4. The Chiefs sign OG Geoff Schwartz to a 3 year, $16m deal and S Hussain Abdullah to a 4 year, $10m deal.

5. The Chiefs place a 6th round tender on Jerrell Powe.

7. The Chiefs re-sign LS Thomas Gafford to a minimal deal.

8. The Chiefs let walk: WR Dexter McCluster, WR Kyle Williams, OT Brandon Albert, OG Jon Asamoah, DE Tyson Jackson, S Kendrick Lewis, S Quentin Demps, OLB Frank Zombo.

9. The Chiefs cut CB Dunta Robinson

10. Chiefs sign Red Bryant DL, Malcolm Jenkins S (I don't think it's wise to have Commings and a rookie against Manning. Need a vet bad) and OL Winston Justice (also think we need a vet swing tackle).

Draft

Note: Beckham and Ebron, as well as both safeties are gone.

1.Marqise Lee WR USC-Either him or Beckham and I think the Jets or Ravens take him, so we take the best guy on the board who should be a very nice #2 next year and possible long-term #1 WR.

3.Christian Jones ILB FSU-There is a reason why John Dorsey was looking at Kiko Alonso last year. I think Dorsey feels that this is a position that really needs to be addressed. Jones is fast, he's instinctive, he's confident, he's a hitter and most importantly, he's smart.
Having 300+ lb mammoths in Poe and Bryant in front of him will let him roam free, but I really think this guy would be great for blitzes and obvious passing downs. His speed and instincts alone would be huge for this defense. We need what this guy has on this defense in the worst way.

4. EJ Gaines CB Mizzou-Here's one for you Mizzou fans out there. I love this kid and it's no coincidence that Dorsey interviewed him. Gaines is perfect for the slot, and he can play outside too. He had 28 passed defended his first 3 years at Mizzou and 5 INT's last year.
For anyone doubting this kid, look at the Texas A&M game. He owned Mike Evans. Evans only had 4 catches for 8 yards because of this guy.
With Flowers being a possible cap casualty next year, it makes too much sense to draft this guy. Plus Flowers has been hurt a lot lately with his age.

5. James Gayle OLB Virginia Tech-Like Sac, I too am on the James Gayle bandwagon. I officially hopped on when I saw him at the combine. I was really impressed with the kids tape and love his athletic ability. Could very well be a replacement for Tamba when that time comes.

6. Seantrel Henderson OT Miami-I would like us to have a future swing tackle to take over and I think this guy is a great developmental player. He can also play some Guard too. His potential is a poor man's DJ Fluker, but getting a guy like this late in the draft is worth it IMO.

6. Calvin Barnett DT Oklahoma State-Forceful player with some speed to boot. 4 tackles for loss, a pair of sacks, five QB hurries and a forced fumble last year. This is a player that works his ass off and would be very good depth. Good size too at 6'2" 300 lbs.

We've already cut Robinson and re-signed Gafford.

Why aren't more people doing this kind of mock draft thread? They are so interesting to read. Great work, RunKC.

That said, some thoughts:

1. No need to list signing Gafford or cutting Robinson; that's already done.

2. That contract seems small for Berry.

3. I don't like either of those restructurings at this point. I don't think the Chiefs restructure Bowe one damn season after his huge payday, and Ithink the Chiefs will dump Hali in 2015 -- so restructuring him would just load us with more dead money.

4. Schwartz's deal is huge -- over $5m a year?

5. Your safety depth chart is wackadoo. You bring back Abdullah *and* sign Jenkins, with a 4th rounder you just drafted last year? Too many cooks in the kitchen.

As far a the draft is concerned:

1. Personal preference alert: I am really bearish on Lee. Lots of dropped passes, really lackluster season in 2013, and a plethora of other WRs I'd rather have.

2. I am apparently in the sharp minority here that does not believe ILB is worthy of such a high pick. I'd rather this pick be TE, CB, or OLB...

3. I really like all your other picks. I question if Henderson will be there, but these picks are all realistic and really, really good.

I think Brandin Cooks is going to be a star and I'd take him over Lee.

If Beckham is gone, which I think he will be, Cooks is who I want.

It was hard for me to choose between those two. I would not mind Cooks at all though. I'm a fan.

I think you want a guy with #1 potential. Beckham is that guy for me, but if he's actually off the board, I'd go with Donte Moncrief at #23.

Big, fast, he's a faster Dwayne Bowe if Dwayne Bowe could run better routes.

I've said it before, but I was reading somewhere where one NFL scout thought that Moncrief had the chance to be the best WR out of this entire draft when it was all said and done.

I think Cooks is a pure slot guy. He doesn't seem to have the smoothness of Beckham or his ability to highpoint the ball.

And at this point, I think I'd pick Texas' Mike Davis before Marquis Lee. Lee, while talented, didn't look to be the same guy without Robert Woods opposite of him.

Shun,

We have a different opinion on the ILB spot. I agree with TBG about the importance of that position and feel that we could really use an upgrade.
As for S, I just don't know with Commings. Is this guy injury prone? Can we count on him to be available next year?

Oh, and just to reiterate, I want EJ Gaines on this football team. He's one of my favorite players in this draft. With our situation at CB, we could really use this guy.

To support this, the Chiefs have met with BYU's Kyle Van Noy, who I think would be a absolutely stellar ILB in a 34 on the same level as Derrick Johnson (and I've stated previously that I felt that Van Noy was extremely similar to Johnson at the same stage - very fast, instinctive, etc., without the need to be motivated in his early NFL career - Van Noy is a very vocal on the field leader).

Having those two guys out there for three downs would be huge.

Don't be surprised if they go that route on draft day.

I agree taking a #1 receiver. i'd take moncrief or Matthews over cooks/lee.
why take a guy limited to only being a slot guy/flank? why not take a guy who can develop into the #1 role and take bowes spot?

Also I looked at the league leaders in receiving yards a while back and I think only 4 guys in the top 20 were shorter than 6'.

I do still love lee though. he showed us what he can do when all cylinders are firing. he's young, he's overcome a lot in his life. so we know he can overcome a bad season. he was dealt a pretty rough hand last season. lost the woods as you said, but was also injured most of the season, while playing with a new qb who was a RS freshman. And then you have to factor in teams scheming against him. I do think taking davis over him is pretty silly... but I would still take moncrief or Matthews.

I don't think you take a chance on Moncrief in the 1st in this draft. Just way too inconsistent hands. Matthews I could see happening. I don't like Cooks in the 1st either, he's a complementary guy like Welker/Austin/Cruz etc. Some team may be comfortable with taking him but I think the value is a lot better with a guy like Jones/Ellington in the 3rd-5th round.

I would take Cooks over Lee though.

IDK How Henderson could fall to the 6th round. Too many OL coaches around the league would be jumping out of their seat saying "I CAN FIX THAT. I can make him special."
