Can we win a Super Bowl with Alex Smith?

Not in 2015, necessarily. Just a general question, really.

I know there is a definite line drawn in the sand on this subject here and I want to know if there is a general consensus one way or the other. I'm kinda on the fence about it...but I'm leaning towards no.

If we get the OL to block as a top ten unit. The receivers grow into a top ten unit and the backs and tight ends are also top ten...paired with the defense being similar to last year (maybe a hair better) is Alex Smith a guy that can help the team win it all?

Of course, this would mean we would get a break here and there in the postseason.

Answer: Yes, but I don't want to have to try to win a Super Bowl with him.

I've had this conversation too many times to want to get into it, but I rarely judge a QB based on his YPG average.

At any rate, Russell Wilson's rookie season was better than any of Alex's 10 year career. People love to cite his defense and running game for his success, which there is no denying, but conveniently ignore his subpar WR and TE options. They've also experienced a number of offensive line issues during his time there.

Wilson makes big plays in big games, consistently. He's great on the run and, more importantly, never takes his eyes from down field. He stands strong in the pocket. He can and does make all the throws. He has a great balance of aggression and risk-aversion.. And he's still learning.

I'd be very pleased if he were our QB.

Anything is possible. I'm not counting on it though. I just don't trust him in big moments. He was like 1-4 last year when we had the chance to tie or take the lead in the final drive of the game. Of course the argument is how much is that the personnel surrounding him or is it Smith? We'll find out this year as there are no more excuses.

Speaking of no more excuses...we all know one thing, and that this is a big year. It's year three of this regime. No more excuses for anyone. It's playoff win or bust for this year. Anything less is a failure.

Alex needs to grow a set of balls that's for sure. He's like watching your grandma play most of the time. No balls.

Of course you would be pleased. We would all be pleased if Russell was our QB instead of Alex. They play the same type of football (apart from 2 or 3 more big/clutch plays a game that Russ makes). Russell Wilson is simply a better version of Alex Smith.

But it doesn't change the fact that the Seahawks are 100% reliant on their defense, not their QB. All you have to do is look at their opponents PPG to see this. When their defense shuts down the opposing offense, they win. When they don't, they lose. Its that simple. And no, this isn't a John Madden type comment. The Seahawks rarely win when their defense isn't amazing. Russell Wilsons best games have come in Seahawk losses.

Bottom line is, while Russell is not a finished product and is already light years better than Alex, he is simply not a top tier QB. He is very overrated and has yet to prove he can win games for his team without the help of a dominant defense. When they play average or poorly, the team loses. Period.

Keep in mind that Brady was just a game manager for his first 2 or 3 years before growing into his own. Same thing for Big Ben.

They had success early because they didn't do too much and their offenses grew slowly along with them...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

I don't care about anything you said. As Rausch and I illustrated, he's only just beginning his career.

Russell Wilson is absolutely a QB you can build your franchise around.
