Game of Thrones *Spoiler* Thread

There's been some recent confusion with the old spoiler thread, so I'm kicking off a new one for tonight's premiere. This is going to be the one for folks who've read all the books. So anything anybody might want to talk about is in bounds. Suffice to say, if you haven't read the books, you'll probably want to stay out of here until you do...

I'll bump the old spoiler-free thread shortly in case anybody's interested. For future reference the link to that one is here

Ahh, I don't remember that at all. I remember Varamyr in ADWD. Just going to have to re-read everything before TWOW, I guess.

Don't know what choice the directors will make. I just want to see him in action, liked the character and his creatures in the book.

HBO parent company Time Warner has released their latest quarterly earnings report and within it are the latest viewer numbers for Game of Thrones. HBO is now reporting that Game of Thrones averaged 14.2 million viewers per episode last season. This is a 20% increase over season 2′s viewership number and is a significant jump from the last reported number of 13.6 million.

What does this mean? It means that even well into season 3 Thrones‘ viewership is still climbing. Which is pretty unprecedented for a drama like this. I suspect the Red Wedding may have had something to do with the late season jump as people got caught up on the show to see what all the fuss is about.

This also means that Game of Thrones is very, very close to becoming HBO’s most-watched show of all-time. The Sopranos is currently tops with an average of 14.4 million viewers per episode. Game of Thrones may very well break that next season.

Time Warner CEO : ‘Game Of Thrones’ Setting Piracy Records Is ‘Better Than An Emmy’

Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes had his annual earnings call this morning, in which he discussed all sorts of money-related things that are very boring and are only important to people who have stupid things like “stocks” and “investment portfolios” and “retirement strategies.” But he also discussed Game of Thrones and piracy, and in doing so, he said this, which I kind of love.

Quote:
The much-discussed fantasy series is HBO’s most popular, and “if you go to people who are watching it without subs, it’s a tremendous word-of-mouth thing,” the exec told investors. “We’ve been dealing with this for 20, 30 years—people sharing subs, running wires down the backs of apartment buildings. Our experience is that it leads to more paying subs. I think you’re right that Game of Thrones is the most pirated show in the world,” he said. “That’s better than an Emmy.”
The point he’s making here is a good one. The type of people who pirate shows like Game of Thrones are also, generally speaking, the type of web-savvy individuals who rave about it on Twitter and message boards, and make mashups and all kinds of other fan-created content related to the show, which serves as free publicity for HBO when it all gets posted and discussed on sites devoted to television and/or web culture (UPROXX, The Culture of What’s Buzzing). As a result of all that, more people who want to see what everyone’s talking about, but have money to burn or are just less-inclined to pirate shows online, will sign up for a subscription. So, basically, having the most pirated show means generating the most of this kind of buzz, which probably does do more to increase subscriptions than winning a single Emmy.

But there’s something about his phrasing. “Game of Thrones is the most pirated show in the world. That’s better than an Emmy.” If you take away the context, it makes him sound less like the CEO of a huge media company and more like a stoned 20-year-old college student who came home for Christmas with dreadlocks and a severe distrust of corporations, and is explaining the unfiltered populism that can be found online during a 20-minute rant to his parents about the benefits of anarchy. I like that.

Too much CGI. I can't believe they let something so minor hold back the show.

Hadn't thought of that, good point. HBO is huge budget so I'm not counting it out.

Every so often I'll check the Winds of Winter wiki page to see if there's any new news. Apparently Martin has said that WoW is "tentatively" planned to be released next year.

Take it for what it's worth.

Thanks for the tip, will have to start looking at that page. Yeah, I'll believe WoW is out when I see it.

I'm finally caught up in the books. I kind of avoided the last two because I'd heard bad things. But I enjoyed them both.

I am a bit worried that the world has gotten too big for him to wrap up. We need some carnage in the next book to wrap some stories up and get characters out of the way.

And what's the chance we actually get to see tyrion riding a pig on HBO? If they can pull those stories off...
