Mock (4/6)

1. The Chiefs extend QB Alex Smith 6 years, $90m (when you break the numbers down, it will actually break down to 4 years, $60m, with something like $35m guaranteed), and S Eric Berry 6 years, $45m ($23m guaranteed). They will extend Justin Houston at some point during the 2015 season.

2. The Chiefs sign RB Fozzy Whittaker (Browns) to a minimal deal, OT J'Marcus Webb (Vikings) to a 2-year, $4m deal, and S Kurt Coleman (Eagles) to a minimal deal.

On with the show:

1.23. OG Xavier Su'a-Filo, UCLA

The Chiefs have only one position on this team with no projected starters whatsoever, and that's right guard. At WR2, they do have Avery with Jenkins coming along. At S, they do have Commings penciled in. But they have nobody at the RG position.

If Su'a-Filo drops here, he's the pick. Prepare thyselves. The good news, at least one hopes, is that Su'a-Filo is a fit for all schemes. He's not a pure mauler but he drops his base and plays very strong with excellent athleticism. He's not quite the technician David Yankey is but he has a much higher ceiling. And, of course, he has tackle flexibility if needed.

3.87. WR/RB/KR Dri Archer, Kent State

The Chiefs need to give Alex Smith more weapons, particularly players who can hit homeruns, and Dorsey has an affinity for speed demons. After acquiring Donnie Avery and trading for AJ Jenkins, Archer gives the Chiefs yet another homerun weapon who should fill in perfectly for what McCluster used to do. Alex Smith has shown a lot of attention to McCluster this past season, so Archer should be able to contribute right away.

4.124. NT Zach Kerr, Delaware

I've been banging this guy's mother drum for a little over a month now, and I can't help but think NFL teams are playing close attention to this guy. You're talking about a 326 lbs pure NT with Poe's athleticism. His college tape is fantastic, he gets penetration and runs like he's 280. He'll need some work in the NFL at dropping anchor, but that's standard.

I think the best pure "big fatso" nose tackle in this draft is Daniel McCullers, and I would have taken him in the 3rd, but I'm growing more convinced McCullers will go in the 2nd round. If that's the case, the Chiefs should be looking long and hard at whoever falls between Kerr, Justin Ellis, and Ryan Carrethers. Kerr, however, has Pro Bowl upside.

5.163. WR Jeff Janis, Saginaw Valley State

The Chiefs dip back into WR again this draft, and with yet again another speed demon. Janis has great measurables at 6'3" with 4.4 speed, but he will require a ton of work hailing from DII. But he was uncoverable at that level, as you'd expect an NFL player to be, putting up nearly 4,000 yards receiving in his career, with over 100 receptions this past season. He creates huge mismatches as bigger corners can't hang with his speed, and smaller corners struggle to jam him. His primary goal will be proving he can run sharp routes and get separation, something he had limited success with at the Senior Bowl.

6.193. OLB Michael Sam, Missouri

The Chiefs need more muscle rushing the passer, and they got some help this offseason with Vance Walker, but they need to make sure they can bring more heat on the outside. And, yes, Sam can't do all the things you'd ask an OLB to do, but he can bend the corner and provide quality depth. In the 6th, if you can land a guy who can rush the passer on Day One, you take him, and I feel that Sam is going to drop like a rock in this draft because of his limited athleticism and media firestorm. Andy Reid, however, knows how to handle media firestorms.

6.200. S Kenny Ladler, Vanderbilt

I believe I've drafted Ladler a couple times this draft season, and it's because he's really good value in the late rounds. You're talking about a guy who's got it all between the ears -- his opportunism and playmaking ability are ideal for the position. He's not a pure FS or SS, but with all the three-safety packages Sutton puts together, that's an asset.

Oh man I hope we don't go this way. G in the first and a RB that we don't need with our 3rd. NO THANKS

It's really, really hard to put together a really good mock with a OG in the first.

Well anything but a RB with our 3rd would have been a huge improvement.

WR in the 3rd instead of a diminutive RB?

Archer = McCluster

He'd have the exact same role on our team.

McCluster has already been replaced. No need to waste a pick on that spot. Especially a 3rd round pick. We need playmakers at starting positions.

Yeah, I know, but he'll have way too much to learn and probably won't play more than 20% of the offensive snaps as a rookie (probably closer to 10% given the fact that Reid won't trust him at all).

Archer playing WR about 60% of the time.

Some obvious problems to fix, but other than his one horrific drop, pretty good hands and he's really troublesome for teams to mark unless they give him 8 yards cushion.

His route-running will need work.

I don't see how he would be the best WR available then though. With the signings of Weston Dressler and Joe McKnight along with the guys on the team we already have the KR special teams stuff covered.

Lets just say they are camp fodder. Archer would still be the 3rd or 4th RB on the depth chart. Why would we waste a 3rd round pick on our 3rd string RB position. Why not just draft a WR prospect instead of a tweener?
