Tell us about you and what you ACTUALLY believe.

Rarely do we here in this lovely cesspool known as DC do we ever actually get to post our positions not in the heat of debate (or trolliní), and rarely are they ever not twisted and contorted. Sometimes it can be difficult knowing who youíre really talking to. SoÖwho are you? This is who I amÖas candid as I can be.

Hi, my name is Detoxing. A little about me: I grew up poor in a troubled ďhomeĒ. I am half white, half Hispanic, raised by a white, south-east military family in San Diego and hung out with mostly black people. Most of you call me a liberal, an asshole, an idiot . Never any skin off my back though. Itís all good fun.

My white father an addict who fell apart when my mother died, my Hispanic mother a cancer victim that died before I was old enough to remember well. I know what it is to actually be homeless, I know what it is to live in a group home, and I know what it is to enjoy lifeís luxuries. I am not a ďrags-to-richesĒ story, I am just like you guys. I work 6 days a week to feed my family and put a roof over their heads.

I am relatively new to politics. I am a noob compared to a lot of you. There was a way I viewed the world under Obama, and the way I view the world now. Here is what I believe:

1. Illegal Immigration: Yes, I agree that it is a burden. I agree that they create a strain on our social systems that cannot go unchecked. I do not believe in open borders. I believe in protecting our sovereignty. I DO NOT believe in un-empathetic policy. I do not believe in ďstarving them outĒ, raids or mass deportation. I agree that criminals have no business being here. I donít care about a border wall. I think itís useless, but I understand why the desire is there, and I understand that in order to make progress with those here that you first have to fix the leaky faucet. I do not treat all Illegals the same, as they are not all the same.

2. Abortion: I believe in a womanís right to choose to a certain point. This isnít a topic Iím passionate about. I see 3 months as being a cut-off, but am open to new sciences that help determine when life actually begins.

3. Trump: I think the guy is a blowhard. A used car salesman. His tactics are cheap. His linguistics are dated and corny and it boggles my mind how people are so enamored with a guy who acts like a door to door salesman. I donít believe the media treats him fairly. I donít believe the media treats any President fairly. I have very little respect for people who are too lazy to fact check and instead just blurt shit out that they heard from their preferred media source. Trump is that guy.

4. Obama: I think he over compensated. I think he tried too hard to appeal to minority groups and subsequently chastised white groups. I think he helped foster in the Trump movement by making middle America feel abandoned and removed. Things have become increasingly divisive. I canít lay that all on Obama, but he played a part in it, intended or not.

5. I believe ideologies are bad for the world. Religious, political and any else. Ideologies are a breeding ground for ignorance. They cause a tremendous amount of confirmation bias. They cause people to ignore objective rationale and instead cling to defending a position instead of learning about both positions equally and seeking truth. The truth can sometimes mean youíre wrong about what you initially thought. But being right is more important than defending a position that favors your ideology.

While I can write significantly more, this is clearly getting tl;dr and youíre probably bored. So itís your turn.

I truly, honestly want to know more about the people I spend hours upon hours with. We may disagree, but a lot of us are like family. No matter what disrespectful shit I may say on here, you and I, whoever you are, would probably get along face to face. Because being cordial with one another is much more conducive to happiness and success than not. And being bitter bitch is way more taxing than not.

IMO, what happens in DC stays in DC. For most posters, anything mean spirited I say I donít really mean. Just because I talk shit to you, doesnít mean I dislike you. I try to find positivity in everyone. Yes, thereís even things about BEP and PBÖeven Detective Taco that I can admire.

Won’t share much, but something I feel really strongly about is our education system. If there is such a thing as “priveledge”, it would be spoiled rich kids getting elite private schooling and 1X1 time with excellent teachers/tutors from an early age that give them an enormous advantage over poor and middle class families that can’t afford private school and have to send their kids to public schools that are shitty, not funded and have 1 teacher responsible for 35 to (in some circumstances) 40 kids in a single class.

This thread went really well when i didn't expect it to. Thanks to everyone who participated, opened up a bit. Especially thanks to those who restrained themselves from personal attacks.

I actually learned quite a bit from this thread. Personally i feel like when you can understand the man, and why he developed the position that he did, you can better understand the position itself, which leads to a more respectful conversation. Respect for each other's positions is more likely to yield constructive results.

Through the years i've learned a lot from DC. I've taken a little bit of something from everyone. Thanks to all of you. I'm going to take a break from D.C for awhile. Have fun guys.

I agree with this 100%.

Those who say everyone has an equal opportunity to succeed in this country, have never seen the disparity between schools.

Limited hangout of my biography:

I grew up in unincorporated (rural) Clay County.

I had 3 siblings and a Leave It To Beaver childhood. Riding bikes, camping, fishing, swimming, playing backyard sports and building snow forts kept me occupied, but I also had a healthy dose of TV (e.g. Munsters, Lost in Space, saturday morning cartoons) and reading (Alfred Hitchcock and the Three Investigators mysteries and WWII submarine adventures were typical interest areas).

I was a lifeguard at a private club during my teen years which was the greatest (and easiest) job ever. Back then, it was pretty laid back and at a private club you donít have a lot of people who need close supervision so it was pretty social. Most places these days have pretty strict rules about lifeguards actually focusing all their attention on the job so itís better for safety but not nearly as fun.

Math and science were my favorite subjects so my school counselor suggested engineering. My dad was an electrical engineer, but I never really understood what he did. I went to college for engineering anyway (UMRolla). After working in the defense industry for a few years I went law school (UTexas). I never actually did any engineering and I never practiced law. I was an aircraft performance analyst and later a management consultant.

I have several gay friends. The best man at my wedding was gay. So was the flower girl although we didnít know at the time. Unfortunately, so was the bride, which is another thing I didnít know at the time. It was quite a shock 23 years later when it came to light. I donít have any black friends except those of you who post here. I do have a black guy in my avatar though so Iím obviously not a racist.

I was diagnosed with liver cancer in 1993. Iíve had chemo and radiation and lots of surgeries to remove chunks of flesh and the occasional important organ (most notably one of my lungs). It will eventually kill me, but Iíve given up guessing when. The doctor told me I had 2 or 3 years left in 1993, so Iím well into gravy time, I guess.

I have two daughters. The oldest graduated from Mizzou and is starting life in NYC where she met her fiancť. Sheís fairly conservative but keeps it quiet. She felt unsafe after Trump won because of the way her coworkers and others around her talked about him and his supporters. Her fiancť seems like a great guy. Heís Puerto Rican, heís entrepreneurial, and he likes Chance the rapper. The youngest is studying abroad in Prague this summer and will graduate from Mizzou next year. Sheís very conservative (and seriously Catholic). She keeps texting me about how crazy liberal the Europeans are. Theyíre both great girls. (If they decide to join the military as BEP thinks they should, Iíd be supportive, but itís their decision).

Thatís enough for now.

I'm middle class. I put my kid through private school for nearly 16 years and home schooled the last two years. I had her read every night from age 4 on, played word games etc.

I simply got rid of the second car, bought a smaller home with a smaller mortgage and went without a lot of things for myself including fancy vacations to pull it off. When I see a low income black women working three jobs to put her child through the same school, I really have to wonder about this claim. Plus I had her tutored to begin reading at age 4 and again for some algebra, she didn't get, for her SAT.

I went to school in a class of 50 with one teacher. I didn't end up half as bad as what I see today.

If you want it bad enough, you make the sacrifices. When I see Americans buying bigger houses, taking expensive trips, buying expensive cars who then say they can't afford it, I really have to wonder about them. Especially if they paid for day care already. That takes a chunk out too.

talk to your real father, the one who raised you...

i'd venture that he would want you to know your bio and wouldn't want to be the reason to keep you apart...

ask him about it, you may be assuming things that aren't necessarily accurate wrt to him wanting you to reconnect...

whatever you do, you have to do what is best for you and only you can make that decision...

good luck to all of you (you, your real dad, and your bio dad)...

and know that you have some old dude stranger on cp who is pulling for you...

Racism and misogyny. If we want all races and sexes to be equal, white men are going to have to give up something. Things can't just stay the same for white men and add rights and privileges to other groups. You can't give power to one group without removing some from another.

Obama. A good man and an okay president. He could have done much more for this country if allowed to by congress.

Obamacare. A good idea poorly implemented. We need universal healthcare. It would give everyone coverage and be cheaper for everyone.

America. We're already great, but could be greater. We squabble over little stuff instead of looking to the big picture. Our standing in the world is falling back. We have the greatest economy in the world, but our healthcare and education rankings are dropping. With all this money, we should be be the happiest country on earth.
What exactly are white men supposed to give up? And why? Just because I was born white I have to give something up? You can **** right off sir.
