Tell us about you and what you ACTUALLY believe.

Rarely do we here in this lovely cesspool known as DC do we ever actually get to post our positions not in the heat of debate (or trollin’), and rarely are they ever not twisted and contorted. Sometimes it can be difficult knowing who you’re really talking to. So…who are you? This is who I am…as candid as I can be.

Hi, my name is Detoxing. A little about me: I grew up poor in a troubled “home”. I am half white, half Hispanic, raised by a white, south-east military family in San Diego and hung out with mostly black people. Most of you call me a liberal, an asshole, an idiot . Never any skin off my back though. It’s all good fun.

My white father an addict who fell apart when my mother died, my Hispanic mother a cancer victim that died before I was old enough to remember well. I know what it is to actually be homeless, I know what it is to live in a group home, and I know what it is to enjoy life’s luxuries. I am not a “rags-to-riches” story, I am just like you guys. I work 6 days a week to feed my family and put a roof over their heads.

I am relatively new to politics. I am a noob compared to a lot of you. There was a way I viewed the world under Obama, and the way I view the world now. Here is what I believe:

1. Illegal Immigration: Yes, I agree that it is a burden. I agree that they create a strain on our social systems that cannot go unchecked. I do not believe in open borders. I believe in protecting our sovereignty. I DO NOT believe in un-empathetic policy. I do not believe in “starving them out”, raids or mass deportation. I agree that criminals have no business being here. I don’t care about a border wall. I think it’s useless, but I understand why the desire is there, and I understand that in order to make progress with those here that you first have to fix the leaky faucet. I do not treat all Illegals the same, as they are not all the same.

2. Abortion: I believe in a woman’s right to choose to a certain point. This isn’t a topic I’m passionate about. I see 3 months as being a cut-off, but am open to new sciences that help determine when life actually begins.

3. Trump: I think the guy is a blowhard. A used car salesman. His tactics are cheap. His linguistics are dated and corny and it boggles my mind how people are so enamored with a guy who acts like a door to door salesman. I don’t believe the media treats him fairly. I don’t believe the media treats any President fairly. I have very little respect for people who are too lazy to fact check and instead just blurt shit out that they heard from their preferred media source. Trump is that guy.

4. Obama: I think he over compensated. I think he tried too hard to appeal to minority groups and subsequently chastised white groups. I think he helped foster in the Trump movement by making middle America feel abandoned and removed. Things have become increasingly divisive. I can’t lay that all on Obama, but he played a part in it, intended or not.

5. I believe ideologies are bad for the world. Religious, political and any else. Ideologies are a breeding ground for ignorance. They cause a tremendous amount of confirmation bias. They cause people to ignore objective rationale and instead cling to defending a position instead of learning about both positions equally and seeking truth. The truth can sometimes mean you’re wrong about what you initially thought. But being right is more important than defending a position that favors your ideology.

While I can write significantly more, this is clearly getting tl;dr and you’re probably bored. So it’s your turn.

I truly, honestly want to know more about the people I spend hours upon hours with. We may disagree, but a lot of us are like family. No matter what disrespectful shit I may say on here, you and I, whoever you are, would probably get along face to face. Because being cordial with one another is much more conducive to happiness and success than not. And being bitter bitch is way more taxing than not.

IMO, what happens in DC stays in DC. For most posters, anything mean spirited I say I don’t really mean. Just because I talk shit to you, doesn’t mean I dislike you. I try to find positivity in everyone. Yes, there’s even things about BEP and PB…even Detective Taco that I can admire.

Middle child, black sheep. older sister and younger brother both liberals, both parents conservative. Accounting degree, 2nd and final marriage 2 step kids, Taxes suck...

(1) Illegal immigration - keep them out too many ways to legal immigration

(2) Abortion - Rare, shouldn't be use as birth control.

(3) President Trump - he is not a conservative, he is not a liberal, he is a populist and right now the mood is swinging to the right. He is not a politician, he has common sense and he is a business man.

(4) Obama - didn't reach out to the right. had less experience leading than Trump does.

(5) Taxes - Can we get a flat Tax Fed? exempt the first $30,000.00 income, flat tax the rest. Good bye IRS, simple math.

(6) who doesn't like a good meme?

Started listening to Rush in daily 1989, stopped around 2010ish due to work. Presidential rank during my life:
1)Reagan
2t)Bush and Bush
4)Clinton
5)Nixon
6)Obama
7)Carter

Trump isn't done yet so won't rank him yet.

What do I believe?

Well, I believe in the soul, the cock, the pussy, the small of a woman's back, the hangin' curveball, high fiber, good scotch, that the novels of Susan Sontag are self-indulgent over-rated crap.

I believe Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone.

I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing Astroturf and the designated hitter.

I believe in the sweet spot, soft core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, soft, wet kisses that last three days.

Spoiler!

But seriously...

Gun rights. I don't want to take your guns, but I do want it to be harder for the people who will do harm with them to get them. No law will prevent all shootings, but we should look for ways that will reduce the numbers.

Wealth inequality. I feel this is the biggest problem in the country right now. The middle class is going away and it's not because they are moving up. Companies are making record profits and are now getting a big tax cut. Time to take care of your people.

Taxes. Pick a rate and stick with it. Base spending on what's coming in.

Immigration. Not a big concern for me. The wall is a terrible idea. Way too much money for not much benefit. We have walls set up in high population areas along with checkpoints. That's good enough.

Trump. Awful human being and a terrible president. Once he was elected, I wanted him to succeed, because that means he is doing well for the country. I personally believe he cares little for the people of this country, but only cares what they think of him. It's going to take years to repair the damage he's done to our foreign relations and the environment due to deregulation.

Abortion. I don't like it and would have no problem if it were illegal. But since it's not going anywhere, we should work to reduce the number of abortions through education. People are going to have sex, but need to use contraception if they don't want kids.

If you want to talk about being "easy to read who you are", this thread is telling. Some are candid, others are clearly hostile to the idea of a candid, non aggressive thread. That's pretty defining.

mmm, ok, "severe boring possible" alert:

70 yo ex-hippie

got a dd-214 in '69

this and that, up and down, lots of good drugs, lots of stories to tell my grandchildren and their friends, sorta college...

got a b.ph in the early 70's

got a j.d in the mid-70's

i tell great stories around the campfire about the ivy league and various luminaries like young bill and studious sam,

hillary? not so much...

represented disability claimants for about 200 years, retired, and un-retired, sort of...

as far as politics? on most issues i'm at least far left as bernie, if not much more so...

even in a very liberal law school, i was remarkably far more progressive than most of my colleagues...

all for abortion - it's really up to the woman and over my entire lifetime i have driven ladies to the abortion doctor and home again, contacted people who knew people who could arrange abortions, and supported the choice of every woman in my life who faced that decision... remember, it was very illegal until the mid-year of law school, and people went to jail...

illegal immigration is being conflated with immigration issues in general...

adjustments of status have happened every day in america for decades, and every now and then the feds get smart and adjust the status of whole categories of people (you folks call that "amnesty")...

dreamers should have their status adjusted to something that will allow them to go to school and to work legally...

and haitians and whoever else trump is throwing out for no particular reason other than he can do it, they should have had their status adjusted decades ago, rather suddenly being told to go back to wherever they came from...

people who are here and have roots in their communities are as american as me or my wife's chain-migrated family (all 50 + are now citizens)...

so enough of immigration-related issues...

just wanted to comment on that part...

i have a son who is 51 who was given up for adoption and spent years and years trying to find out who his parents were...

i also have close relatives who are/have been on both ends of that situation...

1) most of the time, the parents-to-be are simply not capable of providing for a child, for a wide variety of reasons like age, lack of finances, illness and the like... (i.e., you probably weren't "abandoned" but even if you were, life is short, more on that later; and that was my situation with my first son i was 18 and the mom was 17 in the mid-60's)...

2) most of the time the biological parents are afraid to get in contact with their children and be forced to confront their own agonizing choices that they had had to make, to say nothing of being afraid that the child will be angry and reject them...

3) most of the time (and sometimes it takes a very long time, like 30 years) the bio(s) and the adult child will give it a go and discover that they had been missing a very big part of their life...

4) and here comes the life is short part... my first son (adopted at birth) has spent fifty times as much time with me over the last almost 3 decades, while my second son just recently contacted me after 25+ years of estrangement (brought on mostly by his mother's antagonism towards me)...

second son has only a few years (i'm freaking 70 now, ) to really get to know me and share whatever experiences we may enjoy, while first son has already been doing that for roughly the same time period...

ergo, the longer you wait to let go of the hurt and bitterness and reconcile with your father, the less time you will have to spend together, because life is short and done in a heartbeat...

people change, people make mistakes, everybody does...

forgive and let all those wasteful emotions and issues just drain away...

life is short, the longer you wait, the more you will regret throwing those remaining years away...

all of this is spoken both from the heart and from the wealth of experience from a fairly long life and direct experience with this situation from nearly every perspective...

think about it, for your own sake;

whatever your father derives from the relationship is just gravy...

sometimes experience (even the experience of others) is actually the best teacher...

please think about giving it a try... [/soapbox]

I have given it a lot of consideration over the years. My position for the longest time was that if he reached out that I'd have a friendship after talking with him if it was possible. But a few years ago I changed my mind to as long as the man who raised since I was two when my mother remarried is alive then I won't do so. I do think it over every so often and I could eventually change my mind. Thank you for the advice
