Dr. Pepper The Doctor Of Choice For A 104-Year-Old Woman
March 18, 2015 5:49 PM

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - A Fort Worth woman is celebrating her 104th year of life. “Well at 103 I didn’t think I’d make it, but I’m still perking along.”

At 104 years old, Elizabeth Sullivan says she doesn’t need the advice of real doctors. So she keeps another doctor close by.

“People try to give me coffee for breakfast. Well, I’d rather have a Dr. Pepper.” Sullivan fell in love with the soft drink’s trademark “23 flavors” when she was in her 60’s. “I started drinking them about 40 years ago. Three a day. Every doctor that sees me says they’ll kill you, but they die and I don’t. So there must be a mistake somewhere.”

For her birthday she got a very big surprise. A beautiful cake shaped like what else, Dr. Pepper.

Commenting on her special day she said, “When you live to be 104 and still can talk to nice people, you deserve some Dr. Pepper, but I never expected this.”

She even got a gift basket straight from the CEO of Dr. Pepper Snapple Group, Larry Young.

Sullivan is well known in the Fort Worth community. She taught math at Paschal High School for 15 years. Tutored football players for free. Today she’s thinking more about what and who she’s thankful for.

“Man I’m feeling good. I’m glad I’m still here. I’m glad I’m not in a rest home. Glad I can read books and watch TV and have people come by and say hello.”

She was asked if she has a secret for living past 100. She said she really doesn’t, other than, “you just keep living”.

Bloody Mary's are my pre-ski drink. Otherwise, no. Unless I'm monstrously hung over, which is rare. They are a situational drink.

I think the thing is, spicy food burns my mouth, while spicy drinks burn my throat, which is considerably less desirable.

Can't abide it personally. I love spicy food, but not spicy drinks. Don't like bloody marys or chile beer for that matter.

Where can I find spicy ginger ale? Can't say I've ever had a ginger ale with bite. Most are pretty tame.

I like Creme Soda. It's the best soda with BBQ.
I've switched to Diet Sodas, although the chemicals in them I'm sure are as bad for you or worse than sugar. I just try not to drink more than one or two a day. In the diet world, I like Dr. Pepper 10, A&W Root Beer and Creme Diet, and for Ginger Ale, Vernor's diet. Diet Cherry 7up is OK too.

I only drink carbonated beverage when I am drinking hard alcohol. But if I had to drink something by itself then my favorite is the Lemon San Pellegrino. That stuff is so good.

Most of the "gourmet" sodas you'd find in somewhere like Whole Foods. If you can find Vernor's in the grocery, try some. I like it a lot.
There's one called something Buffalo or Buffalo something that's really spicy.

Edit: Buffalo Rock.

I have Vernors is the only ginger ale I buy. But it's not spicy. I'll look for buffalo.

I'm guessing this?

Yeah, that's the one.

Vernor's isn't spicy but it has more bite than Canada Dry. Maybe not bite... Personality.

I don't drink carbonated sugar drinks. I've maybe had ten in the last 30 years.

Yuck.

I usually only drink the diet carbonated beverage outside of San Pellegrino and mostly only when drinking alcohol. The regular pop is just way too sugary.

Some of the local grocery stores that carry Mexican Soda have what's called "Ginger Beer." It's a jamaican style spicy ginger soda. I've tried it, but don't like it.

If you like Ginger Ale, try Vernors. It was founded in Detroit, and is one of the oldest continually produced sodas in the USA. It's a great mixer too. I like Vernor's and Crown Royal.

That ginger beer is for Moscow Mules. It's good shit when mixed in that drink with vodka and lime juice.
