Geno Smith missed team meeting

Updated: October 6, 2014, 11:05 AM ET
By Rich Cimini | ESPN.com

SAN DIEGO -- Among other problems, the New York Jets need to work on their clock management.

Quarterback Geno Smith and a few other teammates missed team meetings Saturday night because they went to see a movie and didn't make it back in time, according to a source familiar with the situation.

Smith & Co. got "messed up" because of the three-hour difference between Eastern and Pacific time, the person said.

The Jets traveled to San Diego on Friday in an attempt to acclimate themselves before they faced the Chargers on Sunday at Qualcomm Stadium. Players typically have free time before team meetings, so it's not unusual that they decided to catch a movie.

It wasn't immediately clear whether the players were reprimanded. No one was benched or appeared to have reduced playing time.

On Monday morning, a team spokesman called it an "honest mistake" and confirmed that Smith arrived 10 to 15 minutes after the meeting ended. Smith caught up afterward with offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg and quarterbacks coach David Lee.

It was Smith's first missed meeting, the spokesman said.

The Jets confirmed ESPN.com's reporting that said Smith was late because he got confused by the time difference. Coach Rex Ryan always keeps the team on Eastern time for West Coast trips, but Smith was thrown off because he saw the time on his cellphone, which showed Pacific time, a source said. The mix-up happens to a player on every West Coast trip, another source said.

Ryan didn't announce any discipline to the team, but some close to the team suspect the players will get fined.

Smith started Sunday's game, played poorly and was pulled at halftime in favor of Michael Vick. Ryan said he replaced Smith, who recorded a career-low 7.6 passer rating, because he was looking for a spark. The Jets trailed 21-0 then and ended up losing 31-0.

"If not then, then when?" Ryan said in explanation of his halftime change.

The coach quickly declared that Smith will return to his starting role for Sunday's game against the Denver Broncos.

The New York Daily News first reported that Smith missed the meeting.

For Smith, it continues a concerning pattern of behavior. Eight days ago, he cursed at a fan after the Jets' loss to the Detroit Lions. He apologized immediately but was fined $12,000 by the league.

A few days later, Smith bristled during a media session when a reporter asked him whether he thinks Vick would provide a spark off the bench.

The real scandal will come when it is revealed that Smith and his "teammates" went to see the movie Bathhouse Orgies 9: Steamed Studs.

Nice talent, albeit a bit overrated but doesn't have the mentality or bearing to make it for long as a starter in the NFL.
He showed his hand at the draft when he ran off like a 4 yr old. Reminded me of the Draft Day movie where everyone knew something was off with him.

Geno's fate was sealed the second he was drafted by the Jets. Who knows what could have been, but we definitely know what is.

Meh, he was going to fail anywhere that he went just based off of his weak character alone. Just isn't cut out for the limelight.

It's funny that the only people that even ****ing care enough about Geno to bring him up supposedly hate the guy.

What a bunch of teenage girls.

Now does everyone see why Andy wanted Alex Smith? How many games would this team have won if they would have taken Geno? And same for this year? Overall the Chiefs have a lot of deficiencies to address. Andy was probably thinking he wouldn't make it past year two without a guaranteed good QB. Build up the team around Alex and when the right QB comes along draft him and let him sit for 2-3 years and learn the game. That way you have a good team around a good QB.

Alex may not light the world on fire but he's also not going burn it down either.

Because that's always the goal, right?

Win just enough to sell out the stadium, that's good enough for Chiefs fans!

Winning feels good man. Did you not feel good throughout the weeks where KC wins? or even battles well and plays the better teams till the end?

You would really feel no differently after suffering many huge blowout losses.. ending up 2-14 again, and having everyone else laughing?

Wins feel great... close losses against better teams sting, but one can still find some pride in such a loss. Losing miserably all year is... miserable.

I haven't "felt" anything after a Chiefs game for a long time. I no longer feel "good" when they win, nor do I feel "bad" when they don't.

In fact, I watch the Chiefs just like I do SNF or the CBS game on Thursday night - it's football, and other than having much more knowledge about the Chiefs than other teams, I don't really care if they win or lose anymore.

And FYI, other teams' fans are still laughing at us. Going 10-6 and losing in the first round of the playoffs doesn't stop that.

If anything, they see all of the adoration Alex Smith gets and they think Chiefs fans have finally ****ing lost their minds.
