Plus, as I mentioned earlier, my defense outside of Stephon Gilmore doesn't have a single starter and a few guys are not even in the league anymore (Aaron Curry and Ellis Hobbs). It's going to be impossible to completely turn over the defensive roster as well as the handful of positions I need to fill on offense in one offseason so how will the production for my defensive players that aren't actually starters in real life be determined?

SNR -- yes the performance in the real NFL affects their performance in Sandbox. Someone who is not on an NFL roster will be treated as a low level reserve, maybe a little better than a free agent.

ThaVirus -- there is a downgrade when you play a player out of position. We don't spell it out completely, but for example playing a RT at LT would be less of a downgrade than playing a C at LT. We tried to be as realistic as possible about the out-of-position downgrades.

See my answer to SNR. If they get enough snaps to be statistically significant, we'll go with those. If they don't we treat them like other scrubs in the league who have played significant snaps.

Ok, not to be a nuisance, but since Newhouse is listed as an LT on the simulation and actually started a full season at LT when Baluga went down, do you know if there will be a huge drop off in production if I don't replace him at LT?

There's a likelihood that his position will be reassigned if he's a right tackle all year. If you switch a player's position, there is some downgrade, similar to what you would see in real life if a RT switched to LT or vice versa.

For practical reasons we have to assign a player to one position, and he gets treated the same as a typical player if he switches positions for you, even if he has a history of playing multiple positions.

If you have a really good LT and you move him to RT, he'll still be a very good RT, but he won't be as good at RT as he was at LT.

Ok, thanks.

One last question, when will free agency and all the other features be open? I'd like to start signing other guys and setting my depth charts.

When we finish the rookie draft the free agency period will begin.

League 1 RG3 (passer rating of 85) did significantly better than League 2 RG3 (passer rating of 67). Player performance is context specific and depends on pass blocking, receiver ability/depth/mix, and game planning. I assume that opponent strength and luck come close to evening out over the course of a season.

So as your team gets better, your version of RG3 should get better.

I don’t remember if we’ve given a full explanation of how free agency works going forward on our real-time schedule, so here goes.

Free Agency

The Sandbox Offseason Free Agency system will work on two phases, as follows:

Phase 1. Sandbox Offseason Free Agency (September-December)

Phase 1 begins upon completion of the rookie draft and the signing of rookie players to contracts. Your bidding power will depend on how much money you have after signing your rookies.

NFL Weeks 1 through 16. Each week, the players currently on the opening-day roster of one or two NFL teams will be added to the free agent pool, as long as they are not on a current Sandbox roster. The teams are selected on a random basis.

Once added to the free agency pool, players will not be removed from the free agent list unless a Sandbox team wins the bid and claims them.

Once a player enters the free agent pool you may submit a bid on him if you have sufficient funds to do so. You may increase another team’s bid and vice versa. The player will be awarded to a team once a bid has been submitted and not raised for three days. If the player was previously under contract to another team, there will then be an additional 24 hours for that team to beat your bid and keep the player, if they choose to do so.

There are no roster limits during this phase. You do not have to maintain a 53-man roster.

At the end of the NFL season, we will have a roster cutdown phase to 53 players.

Phase 2. Sandbox Training Camp Free Agency (January)

We will then have a second phase of free agency where all unclaimed players will be available for bids. This pool will include the following categories of players:

1. Players already in the free agent pool for whom no bids were submitted during the Offseason Free Agency phase.
2. Players cut by teams to get to the 53-man roster.
3. Players who first appeared on an NFL team after opening day.

The same bidding and bid closing rules apply in this period. However, the 53-man rule applies. If you sign a player you have to cut a player to stay within the roster limit.

The order of entry for unclaimed players into the free agent pool for 2013 is as follows:

Week
1 Carolina Panthers
2 Seattle Seahawks
3 Kansas City Chiefs & San Francisco 49ers
4 Pittsburgh Steelers & Philadelphia Eagles
5 St. Louis Rams & New York Giants
6 New England Patriots & Minnesota Vikings
7 Atlanta Falcons & San Diego Chargers
8 Cincinnati Bengals & Houston Texans
9 Detroit Lions & Dallas Cowboys
10 New Orleans Saints & Baltimore Ravens
11 Miami Dolphins & Jacksonville Jaguars
12 New York Jets & Chicago Bears
13 Cleveland Browns & Green Bay Packers
14 Washington Redskins & Indianapolis Colts
15 Buffalo Bills & Arizona Cardinals
16 Denver Broncos & Tampa Bay Buccaneers
17 Tennessee Titans & Oakland Raiders

Is there a difference between playing a RT as a LT and playing a LT as a RT given the tradition of NFL teams playing their better players on the left side? Alternatively, are LTs with a given stat profile rated more highly by the sim than RTs with the same stat profile so that playing them on the opposite side works out better for LTs than RTs?

There is a 0.7% chance of that outcome. You just got unlucky.

Players are generally rated on the same types of attributes, so an LT could be better than an RT at some things and not as good at others. Traditionally, for example, one would expect an RT to be better at runblocking and an LT to be better at pass blocking. But you can certainly have a guy who's really, really good at both.

So I guess the answer is that they are all judged by the same standard. LTs may be naturally better (i.e., higher ratings) because that's a high-dollar position so it may draw the better players, but there's no other reason for an LT to be rated higher. And since people generally play the position for which they're best suited, moving an LT to RT will slightly degrade his skills in position-specific areas. For example, he may degrade a little in run-blocking because his run-blocking rating assumes that he's blocking in space, and a RT position doesn't match that situation as well.

A better example might be moving an RT to fullback. An RT is naturally a better blocker than a fullback when a guy is right in front of him, but if you move him to fullback he's blocking in space on the move, so his rating is going to decline significantly. If he's really good, he might still be a fine blocking fullback, though. However, he might not be as good as a really good fullback who's naturally inclined to blocking in space on the move.

The bottom line is that it's a common sense judgment. If you move a guard to LT, he's probably still going to run block well, but not as well as he blocks inside a phone booth. And his pass blocking will likely be much worse than it would be at guard, because that's a very different type of blocking assignment.

How do we switch a player's position?

I re-signed Reggie Nelson with the understanding that he played FS, which would pair well with Polamalu at SS. The Bengals have been playing him at FS the past 2 seasons, but he's on my team as a SS. If I can't switch him, the 5-year deal I gave him is kind of crap.

That's just one such example. There are a few others I want to do that also make logical sense (moving Lance Briggs to MLB instead of keeping him at the logjam of all those weakside LBs I have)
