Ancestry

Who here uses Ancestry or a similar service? Have you done the DNA test to see your genetic makeup?

I have recently started the family tree and it is really interesting and the search for information, though sometimes difficult, is fun.

How far back in time have you gotten? Anything especially surprising or interesting that you have found?

I'm right there with you. I'm afraid I may owe some child support from the good times I had 30 years ago.

I did it on Ancestry. I got all the way back to Europe on both my parents' sides, to France on one side and Spain on the other. But before the late 1800s there is very little information beyond names available, unless you happen to run into a notable person or someone with military service records. Sometimes you'll only see a name and year of birth or death, so who knows how accurate it really is if you have a common name.

There was some interesting detail though. For example both of my parents' surnames are related to the area they came from in their respective old countries. I learned a few fun details, but I wouldn't put much/any monetary value on it.

I did it, and found out I'm from Croatia. Kind of cool to know where you come from, but I want to do some more digging to see how I got from there to here.

I have been able to find do out the exact ship and day my grandpa's grandpa on my dad's side came over. It's interesting to find the areas they lived in Ireland and see them on the internet.

cool stuff seeing where you came from
That is pretty cool. I am 1/4 Swede myself due to my great grandparents on my dad's side immigrating to the Quad Cities. Unfortunately, even with a cousin in Sweden helping out, we were unable to get any farther than my great-great grandparents names.

On my mom's side we still have not gotten back to the old countries. We have gotten back to a few Revolutionary time ancestors but that is about it. That is where some of my connection with Mo comes from, her ancestors were all over that state (mostly in the NW, St Joe, Hemple, Stewartsville).

Note: this is all due to my and my dad's research, we have not used Ancestry or similar service.

Been wanting to do this for a long time, I know the basics very well... mostly Scottish and Irish on moms side, Swedish and English on dads... but it always seems like there are surprises in store for people who go through with this

Henry Louis Gates does a cool show on this subject for PBS, where he digs into celebs backgrounds then presents them his findings... and there are always cool/strange surprises

I don't want to be "that guy" but how does a person know the information you get is legit. Wouldn't it be pretty easy for them just to make something up? The idea of voluntarily giving my DNA to a database creeps me out a bit too.

I'll put my tin foil hat back on now.

My girlfriend found out she was 1/3 Ukrainian the other day based on ancestry.com. Apparently their great grand parents & old family told the family otherwise due to the cold war era.

Yeah, those are the kinds of interesting surprises that one never knows they might find, like the guy on Ancestrys commercial thinking he was a "Zuccoli" when he is actually more Czech

Or the dipshit who wore lederhosen for years, only to find out he is actually Scottish
