Alex made a few great mid-range strikes today (the throw to Avery comes to mind).

Trent Green had the best mid range (10-20 yard) accuracy of any QB of the Chiefs in recent memory. If Smith can hit those types of passes on a consistent basis, we will still have the potential to have an effective offense.

That was a poor throw that Avery made a great play on.

Be enough for what? It's been 44 years since the Chiefs last SB. This teams fans aren't salivating over a future 1 and done in the playoffs.

Often times that is indeed the difference, and that is exactly what Alex brings to the table. He's a great game manager, i.e. he rarely turns it over. Turnovers are one of, if not the biggest factors in winning.

Of course, every season he is due for a terrible turnover ridden game, but it's the exception to the rule.

6 more to go K.C.!

He's better as a PASSER, not a QB. A QB has other responsibilities beyond throwing awesome balls and making plays. His PRIMARY responsibility is to facilitate the offence without turning the ball over. In this category, Alex is miles ahead of Romo.

Um, I do believe the 49ers are playing SIGNIFICANTLY stiffer competition (they beat the living hell out of Dallas last season), in the most difficult environment in the NFL...

I will say this, though:

1. He can make things happen on his feet, which is invaluable. He reminds me of Ol' Thiggy that way.

2. He doesn't freak out when he's under pressure. So refreshing after years of Matt "Collapses to the ground every time he remembers there are people on the field who want to tackle him" CAssel.
That's another place where he's better than Romo. He is in the top tier of mobility for QBs (a little more athletic than Rodgers, but not on the Kap/Wilson/RGIII/Newton/Vick level obviously), and he does usually keep a cool head under pressure.

How many more times does he have to do it for you to understand that its not just luck?

Its just what and how he wins.
By him not turning the ball over and making a few crucial plays, he tends to win. He's been doing it since midway through the last season under Singletary in San Francisco (that's right... BEFORE Harbaugh got there). It's that simple: protect the ball and you probably win. No, he isn't going to light things up like an elite QB, but he won't lose you the game, and that's the most important thing for a QB.

Smith has done it for more than two seasons, all while being near the top in the NFL in efficiency (when has Tebow EVER been anywhere near efficient?). The comparison is flawed for those reasons.

Not to mention, as someone who has watched Smith his entire career, unlike Tebow or Cassell, Smith CAN read defenses (perhaps better than anyone in the league, and I kid you not- he's on Manning level of intellectual aspects of the position), Smith CAN make all but the most elite level throws, Smith IS a great leader, and he's a great athlete. Comparing Tebow to Smith is ludicrous.

Smith is also VERY lucky he did not throw 2 picks today, including a pick 6. The ball came out late several times, and he was throwing behind a lot of guys.

This is the QB I was afraid of. Good enough to win if the D and run game are awesome. Not good enough if they are not or if the D doesn't set him up with a few short fields or if they're playing another elite team.
Sounds like an 8-8 record to me (please god!!!!).

it sure did look like a crap throw when it went sailing over Bowes head. I thought it was a good throw though. Only Avery could get it.

Did he do anything to overcome those things? Just once on a scramble. He's absolutely limited. a sub 10 YPC rate for the season is horrendous.

And my point was about killing drives you dumb piece of shit. Not about winning.

And before everybody starts bitching about that, I will say that Alex manages the game very well, has great intangibles, etc But he just doesn't take chances or throws the ball down the field at all. It is all short, intermediate safe passes and if he senses any rush he starts getting happy feet.
I believe he threw it down the field 4 times today, and completed 2.
