San Francisco Vandals Tip Over Smart Cars

Only in San Francisco: Vandals Tip Over Several Smart Cars
By Brian Shields
Mon Apr 7th, 2014 4:54am America/Los_Angeles

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A group of eight hooded vandals is apparently responsible for picking up several parked smart cars and turning them on their sides or upside down.

Witness Brandon Michael says he was smoking a cigarette when one of the incidents happened near Bowdoin and Sweeny at about 12:30 a.m. Monday.

“All of a sudden I just see eight hooded figures walk up to the car,” Michael says. “I thought it looked like they were up to no good. And then sure enough they walk up to this smart car right here, all huddle around it, and then lift it up and set it on its hind legs.”

Michael says he thinks the whole thing is kind of silly but clearly an act of vandalism.

Police say witnesses report seeing similar vandalism on smart cars at about the same time just on the other side of I-280. One smart car ended up on its side at Anderson and Ogden while another was left on its roof a few blocks away at Anderson and Courtland.

It’s unclear what the motive may be for the car tippings.

It's got what is ironically called an automated manual transmission....

Here's a couple descriptions from drivers:

Quote:
When accelerating, the dreadful 5-speed automated manual transmission shifts awkwardly and slowly. It may be enough to make you reach for the Dramamine: the engine temporarily slows as the car is about to upshift, jerking the driver forward and then back with each shift. Several times, my wife threatened to walk home.

Two things about driving the car did trouble me. First, it uses an "automated manual transmission," which offers the convenience of an automatic — the car changes gears automatically — coupled with the slow, jerky shifting of a poorly driven manual.

One way to deal with it is to ease off the gas when the car starts to shift, which makes things much smoother. Or you can put the Smart in manual mode and change gears using the lever, or with paddles mounted on the wheel. You still have to take your foot of the gas, but you won't have to guess when the gear changes will kick in.

And second, while I felt fine on the highway, I had a rude shock when I got on the Whitestone Bridge to cross from Queens into the Bronx. The car suddenly shifted to the side, enough so that I thought a tire had blown.

Then I realized: Without buildings providing protection, all 1,802 pounds of the car were being knocked around by the wind. It was a scary, unpleasant sensation.

You said your mom's commute is 40 miles one way so I'm assuming that's mostly highway? If so, I wouldn't doubt that she could get 50 MPG. I was saying, in my boss's car, I only drove city miles and it got closer to 40 MPG. I'm driving a 10 year old Camry and that baby gets almost 35 highway. A lot of these newer cars today are getting over 40..

Yes, thank you for that. Honestly, it may seem like I'm riding on the car a bit harshly but I don't think they're terrible, just not exactly what I'd call worth it. The pros are too few and just don't outweigh the cons.

While typing that I just remembered another issue I had while driving it, the shocks and suspension system blows. The smallest bumps seem like mountains and potholes become caverns.

As I mentioned, economical is subjective. It is 100% economical for my mother and her needs.

Yeah its mostly highway. I will say as another negative, the smart car's suspension is like a rickshaw (sp).

We had a lady who lived downtown above the music store and drove a Morris Mini. We'd periodically pick it up and set it up on the sidewalk, but we never damaged it.

It also has a higher 5 year depreciation percentage. So, if you ignore the economics, it's economical? What you really seem to be saying is that she's lucky, because she's got people in the family who keep the costs down by doing the work themselves, instead of having someone else do it. That would be true of any car, though, in that situation.
