LNBS: Should we expect to see the defense improving?

A few of us talked about it before the season started, but there was some thought that the defense would come out looking horrible and would slowly improve as the year went on. Some reasons why a few of us thought there was a good chance at this...

A few elite offenses in the first 6 games. (Pitt, NE, SD)

A lot of new pieces on defense all over the place, meaning communication is going to be a wok in progress.

I think it’s possible that this defense slowly improves from here on out and if Veach can add a piece or 2 on defense (PP or Honey Badger, etc) while also getting Berry and Sorensen back from injury that those will really help this team down the stretch and in the postseason.

I'll go BossChief on everyone. Defense continues to struggle gets scorched by the Rams. Defense holds a players only meeting, Berry comes back in December, Sutton simplifies the defense, and the Chiefs benefit from having 3 home games in December.

I will also argue Ragland isnt 100% and Hitchens hasnt picked up on the defense because he missed alot of camp. All these things begin to click around December. Better ILB play, Berry/Sorenson return. Yeah.

Yeah, I'd totally forgotten about Hitchens missing as much camp time as he did. Would certainly explain some of his hesitation.

The defense doesnt need to be great. We make the Patriots punt once or twice we win that game. Still plenty of time. Remember when we started off 1-5 in 2015? That defense was setting some franchise records for being bad. I dont expect the defense to turn it around like that team did but it doesnt have to be that improved with this offense.

This is what is so shitty about the whole situation.
These guys don't have to be lights out; just play ****ing competent a few times.

Also maybe some of you football nerds can correct me here but I dont recall Fuller playing inside. Veach and Co were very adamant about playing him on the outside. He was really damn good as a slot guy in Washington maybe time to consider switching that up?

You'd think playing outside would be easier though, since you've got the sideline to help you out. In the slot you're just going wherever your man takes you.

Yeah I dont get it but hes an athletic guy. We got alot of bullets in the chamber that havent been used yet so I'm not giving up. Like I said we just gotta make elite teams punt a few times.

Also a terrible idea I'd like to float if Sorenson cant come back is TJ Ward so done he couldnt give us 5 good games later in the year? Say you think Berry is done atleast you got Lucas back there now you're just missing that physical safety. I'm thinking out loud and grasping at straws.

Here’s a few big (but possible) ifs, that would propel us to a Super Bowl win

Get Eric Berry back nearly healthy for the playoffs. Even if he’s not as fast, he can be an amazing box safety for us that helps eliminate TEs. If all he does is cover Vance McDonald and Rob Gronkowski in the playoffs, all of this is worth it.

Trade for PP. The corners haven’t been the biggest problem, but they can definetely use an upgrade and PP is like Sean Smith on crack. Sean Smith was a difference maker for us and we need a big talented corner. PP would improve the entire defense...not just one position group.

Get Hitchens head in the game. As a few have stated, he’s playing slow when he’s a fast guy. He’s still thinking too much. Hopefully down the stretch and into the playoffs he can get his head into it so he can play fast.

Bring back DJ. His physical ability isn't where it was at one point, but his head is as sharp as ever and he can help these young inside linebackers (Hitch, Ragland, Neiman) learn the defense and their role in it. That would IMO help them play faster. I’d love to see DJ and Hitch at ILB.

Get Chris Jones to be more responsible. He’s reckless a lot and that’s not good for the scheme/defense. He leaves his gap too much trying to make a splash play and gives up chunks because of it. That needs to stop.

Derrick Nnadi need to keep getting more and more reps. He’s pretty damn good if you watch him and even though Williams hasn’t been bad, Nnadi has a chance to be pretty good.

Sorensen needs to come back. He’s not great, but he’s better than anything we currently have.

Houston needs to get right and cause disruption. I think he’s gonna really show up when Berry returns (if Berry returns) because those two are like best friends. If he and Speaks cankeep each other fresh, the pass rush will improve.

Speaks has been low key improving each week. He’s not very fast, but he’s beating blocks and creating pressure. He needs to keep making the best of his opportunities when Houston returns.

Kpass needs to show he can impact games when he gets a chance. He has flashed, I’m actually excited to see how much impact he can have when he gets a chance.

Swing a trade for a guy that can help play the role of money backer. Maybe Buchannon...maybe Dorian shows up...someone needs to step up and own it.

That defense had 3 games in a row that they gave up over 30 points. But they had 4 games wrapped around those where they gave up 20 or less and still lost 2 of them because of the offense. I don't really have time to crunch the numbers but that defense wasn't nearly as bad as this one.

Here's my problem. If you had to take each of your suggestions and give them a probability, only a couple of them are going to happen. There's a couple more that might happen. And then there's stuff like Patrick Peterson that's just not going to happen.

Let's just focus on the guys that are here:

Houston is hurt. His history suggests that he doesn't come back well from injuries, at least not right away.

Berry hasn't played in over a full season. Even if he comes back (and I don't think he will) he isn't going to be great.

Hitchens might finally get it, he might not. Short of easing the scheme, I don't see him getting much better this year but we'll see.

Chris Jones is who he is. I'm not counting on him for anything more than he provides now. Streaks.

Nnadi and Speaks should continue to improve. This one I can accept.

Sorenson will likely be back but as somebody said earlier, this defense must be pretty darn bad if we're banking on Daniel Sorenson to make a big positive impact.

And finally KPass...forget it, I don't wanna talk about KPass. He's Brian Shay to me.
