LNBS: Should we expect to see the defense improving?

A few of us talked about it before the season started, but there was some thought that the defense would come out looking horrible and would slowly improve as the year went on. Some reasons why a few of us thought there was a good chance at this...

A few elite offenses in the first 6 games. (Pitt, NE, SD)

A lot of new pieces on defense all over the place, meaning communication is going to be a wok in progress.

I think it’s possible that this defense slowly improves from here on out and if Veach can add a piece or 2 on defense (PP or Honey Badger, etc) while also getting Berry and Sorensen back from injury that those will really help this team down the stretch and in the postseason.

They should. Young guys getting experience always helps. We haven't seen great signs of it. A few glimmers here and there and that's about it.

If Jordan Lucas continues to improve and Berry and Houston and Sorensen come back and we resign DJ and trade for Peterson the defense could potentially be much better in a month.

That's half the starters and then you can put less responsibility on Fuller and have all kinds of flexibility with Sorensen and Parker as third safeties.

Put Speaks on hydroxycut and you're golden!!!

I kind of thought the premise of playing defense was "read and react..."

That said, I can gather that the article probably talks about the fact that because the Chiefs run a 2-gap scheme along the defensive line, it also causes the linebackers to have to read multiple gaps over the top. Even then, I don't give the LBs much of a pass. It's the NFL and you're a LB so if you can't read what the offense is doing and fill the appropriate gap AND make a tackle, then you shouldn't be playing. Sure, Sutton could run a Wade Phillips type of front and 1-gap everything but the LBs still have to read.

I don't know how scheme can be blamed for linebackers failing to make basic reads. They aren't in proper passing lanes. They aren't filling downhill at all in the run game. They can't tackle. I mean ****, if they did read the wrong gap, at least they should be filling one. I've seen Pop Warner defenses look less like Swiss cheese.

Berry isn't coming back. Houston won't be the same when he does, we've already seen that movie. And they're not trading for Peterson.

Sorenson comes back and they re-sign DJ.

Not gonna be enough.

I don't even think that they re-sign DJ. I think they're banking that Sorensen coming back will be enough.

These are the hopes for the Chiefs' season in a nutshell,

String 6 very unlikely "if" scenarios together, and if they all go right, the defense might be less pathetic.

Ok, so, we've changed LBs, changed safeties, changed corners, added a couple of new DLs, and guess what.....we still suck at stopping the run. What with all of these changes in personnel, it strikes me that there's a fundamental, underlying problem with our defensive scheme! And that's entirely on Sutton.

Hey, I think the guy is a decent coach, but it appears that his tried-and-true schemes simply aren't working anymore. Time for a coaching change.....though I believe it will take the form of Sutton retiring at season's end and Andy finally being forced to find a replacement.

Sutton is an old geezer set in his ways. He's the problem and Andy not giving a shit is the problem. Defense has no chance of getting better with Sutton.

If I give you a crap sandwich and you keep it for 6 weeks it's only going to smell worse. With injuries starting to pile up I don't see much, if any, improvement in the future(although it really can't get much worse).

If we can't improve stopping the run, I'm fearful come cold bad weather late this year will hurt us badly.

Playing against Gurley and the Rams will be a GREAT test to see what we really are capable of.
