What TV do you have and why?

I have a 2012 Samsung PN60e8000 plasma. Got all the bells and whistles but if I had to do it all over again I wouldn't have gotten the one with the motion and voice recognition. Other than that the 600 Hz refresh rate is great and the black levels make this TV fantastic. I am having it calibrated to its true best settings next week.

You don't need a screen, really. You can paint the wall and have it look awesome. A screen is better, but the difference is very, very minimal.

How is it with light in the room? My experience with projectors is that you have to have the room super dark for optimum experience. That is why I was going the 92" Mitsubishi DLP TV when my basement is finished.

Newer projectors are very, very powerful. I don't know that I'd go 140" in 3D in a non-light controlled room, but for regular viewing, it's fine.

Living Room - Samsung UN60D7000 (sweet deal on a floor model)
Bedroom - Samsung UN46C8000 (moved from living room due to sweet deal on the 60")
Bonus Room - Samsung UN55ES6500 (not our primary TV, but wanted a good size for sports/movies)

I've had nothing but good luck with Samsung's LED's, and even though some of the plasmas were tempting (Panasonic GT and Samsung 8000), I couldn't shake the concerns inherent to the technology (buzzing, burn-in, heat) when spending that much on a TV.

I've got a 2 year old Samsung 55 inch LED......that I moved to the bedroom after I bought a panasonic GT-60 inch 3-d plasma for the living room.

I used to be a non-believer of plasma....and a huge fan of Samsung LED......

But now, after I've had both in the house for about 4 months........I prefer the more natural look of the panasonic plasma. It freakin' rocks blu-rays and PS3!!!

When you talk to anyone at magnolia or high-end shops....all the staff will push plasma - and trust me, I wasnt buying into it at first.

I'm so glad I made the plasma choice now.....it freakin' rocks!

Samsung Plasma, Samsung DLP, Sharp Aquos LED, Toshiba LED, RCA LED.

Samsungs are the best, overall, for the price IMO. The Sharp is the best looking, with best speakers. The Toshiba is meh, but was relatively inexpensive. The RCA has a built-in DVD player; POS for the kids to use & not worry about them breaking.

Samsung is always my first option. I have never had any issues and find they produce as good a picture as any. The friends I have in electronics all tell me the same....Samsung.

yes, plasma will always be the best choice if you can control ambient lighting

Projectors always work best if you have complete light control. If you do have a bit of ambient light in the room, you just need a projector with a higher lumen output (brighter) that can overcome the light in the room. The tradeoff is that the brightness of the projector can wash out a bit of the picture detail. Also, a brighter screen can help if there is light in the room. Screens can go from almost a gray color (for a completely dark room) to a really bright white color for rooms that have some light. My first theater was in an English basement that had some light so I used a brilliant white screen from a company called Carada and it worked really well. The screen was $800 but compared favorably to screens you would buy at B&M stores for over $2,000.

Some mey not be able to notice but I sure do, that the 600hz refresh rate of a plasma makes the difference.

LG 50" PLasma - why?...because I got it for $525. I was going to get an LCD 120hz but it was more expensive and was only a 42" if I recall.

Love the Plasma

You boys and your toys! It must have hurt like hell watching the Chiefs lose that big.

All the info is very helpful though, thanks! I'm shopping around for a new TV and have been leaning toward a plasma for some time. Think I'm on the right track.

Plasma will get you the most bang for your buck at this point.

the rest will depend on if you want Plasma/LED/LCD, smart TV etc.
