DLP TVs

We're trying-out the neighbors Samsung DLP TV as he's renovating his basement. I know DLP isn't exactly the most sought after TV these days, but I wonder if people can answer some questions:

1) Will a new lamp really make it brighter? It seems much darker than the TV we're replacing (that's rather screen-burned now).

2) If it get brighter, will the viewing angle get any better?

It seems like a pretty sweet set, $50 seems like a steal, but it seems like I may need to at least put a new $90 lamp in it to make it really worth it.

I have a 65" Toshiba DLP. In its day the only way to get a large screen without dropping $4000 on a plasma screen. Yes a bulb will help the brightness, but also check the picture preferences. Some sets have presets that reduce brightness/contrast to increase bulb life so check those closely. Will never be as bright as current LED sets but if the price is right can you complain?

Had a light engine go out at 4 years old so that will give you the "starry, starry night" look, and yes the off angle viewing is not as good as LED.

Used to love my DLP TV. You can get a huge TV for a great price, but the price of LED and OLED displays have just dipped so much.

DLP's are great for a basement where there isn't natural sunlight that can get in. I used to have a 70'' Mitsubishi DLP and changed the bulp and it didn't skip a beat.

Ever since hanging my LED TV I don't think I could ever go back though.

I still have a 75" Mitsubishi DLP in my basement as one of my TVs. The kids play video games on it and we have it on as one of the sets when I have multiple games on.

I have had to change the bulb once and it did help with brightness. As others have said not much will really help the viewing angle. For the money it is still the best TV I have had. I just cant seem to let it go as it still works, has no motion blur and is crisp and clear.

I had a DLP many years ago. They were a good offering at the time but suck comparatively today. Heck, I just bought a TCL 4k 55" from Target for $300 (using a 20% discount code we had from Black Friday shopping).

As to your question, yes, replacing the lamp will make the picture MUCH better. I had to do that on the Samsung DLP that I had. Night and Day difference... but still a waste of money in my opinion.

Old TV's are no longer worth repairing. The cheapest LCD is superior.

I actually LIKE the cheap LCD's these days as they don't throw in the "smoothing" effects (which makes everything look like it was filmed as a Soap Opera).

If you are cash strapped I would say good deal. We replace our bulb once every 2 years. Always darker than the flat panel tech TVs.

I would say check out Costco or wait til Superbowl week for a TV.

Well the lamp is going to be free, I think I can manage the swap. And the price, now, is one deer heart, a couple pint bags of ground, and the meaty end of a deer shoulder. IOW, he's giving it to me. I held my ground on the backstrap, but when I make them I'm sure he'll be over here asking for a cup of milk. It's code 'round here for, "that smells good, I'd like some."

Not strapped, but why spend the ~$700 if I can get this one for free? I'll be happy if the bulb makes it bright, the angle thing will suck, but it's bigger and sharper than the unit it's replacing.

I bought a TCL '55 Roku TV off of Amazon about 6 months ago for $400 or so and I am extremely pleased with it. Picture and sound quality are better than the 40 inch Panasonic it replaced.

If you are going with a 55" TCL, spend the extra $150 and get the 617 model instead. Hell of a lot better TV. I have on as our "extra" tv and the picture is frankly extraordinary for what we paid for it.
