How much would you offer this dealer for this car? What would be your opening bid?

Just a reference to the movie Raising Arizona. One of the characters names was Nathan Arizona.

I read your Arizona comment, and my brain thought I should throw that out there. My brain isn't very smart at times.

Ah gotcha. No that's pretty clever. I just haven't seen the movie. I hate everything with Nick Cage but should I give that one a shot?

It's a cult classic. Very dry humor. Lots of one liners. It's not for everyone. I fell in love with it when I was a kid. But I know lots of people who hate it

Great characters. Nick cage, IMO is probably the least entertaining of all the characters if that helps at all lol

I have previously shared that the best way to get a great deal is to make friends with a wholesaler who buys at the same auctions the car lot does.

The other thing to look for on a deal is figure out how long it's been on the lot. Most dealerships don't like to keep them more than 90 days and will send them to an auction or another dealership to dump them and get fresh inventory. You can get a better deal if they've been sitting on it for a while.

One salesman told me ( and it might be bullshit so Hometeam can correct me), but he was saying something to the effect that his dealer, and a few others very nearby would "buy" and "sell" cars with one another after a car had be on their lots before 30 days was up. Something to do with insurance purposes. So they were constantly shuffling cars back and forth. I guess maybe they were able to get a better deal on insurance if they were on the lot less than 30, or 60 days

The good advice is coming from Dayze and knowing what the market is bringing on a vehicle. If you know what the market is bringing, you can decide if you are getting a good deal or not.

The day of getting 2 grand off asking price on everything is GONE. Vehicles are priced to sell now a days, especially if they seem like a good deal. A typical used car in my inventory has somewhere between ZERO and a grand mark up. Rarely will we have anything with 2 grand mark up. So no, Mr. Customer, you and your 'cash' cant get 2 grand off of my car that I'm selling for 1800 under cost. Sorry.

Used cars is a BUYERS market, made so with the help of the internet. When you have a buyers market, you cant afford to have massive mark up, because the guy down the street wont, and your traffic is driven by the internet, and they can shop you and him at the same exact moment. So, when a dealer prices a car, they are typically priced to sell. If they aren't, you can tell by looking at similar cars in your area, and you can see immediately if its a good deal or not.

Don't go offering 17 grand unless you want to waste your time.

BTW, anyone who takes joy in making sure a dealer doesn't make any money should really re-consider there lives. I have a family to feed too, and I work for free too much of the time already.

edit: KBB does not write checks, and dealers/banks/auctions couldn't care less what KBB says. Try using the NADA blue book, as that's what the bank thinks its worth, and the banks are the ones writing the checks, not KBB.

Let me guess. You are a car salesman? I bought my truck (albeit 9 years ago) for 4 grand less than what they were asking. Last year I bought my wife a Kia Optima (from a Nissan dealership) for about 3.5k less than they were asking. Don't give me the BS that they won't go down on price. If you have financing and are willing to walk away if they won't meet at a price you both can agree on then you will find the deal you want.

EDIT: I didn't read your entire post. So I see that I was right. You are a car salesman. So folks, take your advice from a car salesman if you believe he has your best interest in mind. Also, I use NADA, as well.

This is pretty close to true. The longer a vehicle has been in inventory, the cheaper they will sell it. Most dealers will actually mark it down as they get older though, so its less of a thing where you can negotiate more, and more of something that they mark closer to what they would actually sell at.

That means you can buy the vehicle on the cheap end for the same amount regardless of how long its been there, you just have to negotiate more to get to that point if the inventory is fresher.

Within our group, we dont take the vehicles to auction, we actually sell them to another store after around 120 days. So they go in the new stores inventory and now they are "0 days" old~

Yes, I am a car salesman, have been for nearly half of my life. I am not saying there are NO circumstances in which a price might come down that far, but in general, its not a good practice to assume a dealer will come down X amount of dollars, especially when the price on the vehicle is already at or below market value. To your point, you are absolutely right that as a customer you should walk away from a car deal that isn't acceptable to you. If you dont, thats where we get into those stories of people trading 1 day, 1 week, or 1 month old cars in.

Also, when I give advice on CP, it is with an eye from inside and outside this business. I am a professional within my field, and have a wealth of knowledge that I dont mind sharing.

Yes, I am a professional businessman with the fisty tat. Deal with it~
