Chiefs Offseason Planet Evaluation: Spencer Ware

Given his injury this year, I wasn't sure whether to include Spencer or not, but what the heck. He was initially going to be a big player in the offense before going down, and some of the evaluation focuses on a player's future.

So tell me what you think about Spencer.

Spencer had no stats this year due to the injury.

For reference, in 2016 Ware had 14 starts and appeared in 14 games. He had 921 yards rushing (4.3 ypc) with 3 TDs, and added 447 yards receiving (13.5 ypr) and 2 TDs. He fumbled 4 times. (Man, that's a really good receiving average, but four fumbles makes me cringe.)

If we had a bunch of picks like last year, sure. But with as few picks as we have this year, I don't think you can use a pick on a RB when there is already good depth there already under contract.

I like Ware, especially now that we have K. Hunt. If he can come back, groovy.

Grab an UDFA RB if you want a new one.

I'd keep the 3 we have and maybe add another from somewhere cheap

Yeah, this. I'm hoping they keep 3 TEs and 4 RB next year instead of the other way around. Depth at RB got really thin this season.

It's crazy how fast Kareem Hunt made me forget about Spencer Ware. Especially considering he was pretty decent for us the year prior. Hopefully he bounces back from his injury. If not, he's easily replaceable. It sucks to lose your job due to injury and a great rookie stepping in and dominating, but it's the NFL. Shit happens.

I didn't forget about Ware as I thought there were many times during the season when the lack of quality depth at RB was problematic.

Honestly I'd like to see an upgrade to West.

Put me down for adding Akrum Wadley to the stable in this draft.

RB depth? It isn't like we had to sign and cut CJ Spiller 14 times. That would be ridiculous.

Yep.

I liked how quick and powerful Akeem Hunt ran and saw why we signed him but to your point West needs to be cut and you can never have enough good thoroughbreds in the stable. The only advantage Char has over Akeem is probably knowing the playbook more thoroughly.

If he is healthy next season, he will be invaluable. West needs to go.

We will all want to strangle Andy when he’s giving a combined 10 carries to Hunt and Ware in any given game.

Spencer gets a middle of the road grade, though most didn't grade him due to the injury. We definitely want to see more of him next year.

2.00 Grade (4.0 point scale)
-1.67 Performance Relative to Expectations (+ = Positive Surprise, - = Negative Surprise)
2.33 Desired Future Role (+ is larger role, - is smaller role)
0.00 Ascending/Descending (+ is ascending, - is descending)
