Alex Smith to ask for release

http://tracking.si.com/2013/01/28/al...?sct=obnetwork

If no draft picks are involved, does that change your opinion on bringing him in?

Draft pick, Smith, Stanzi(?) as your QB's in camp.

I'd give a 4th rounder for Alex Smith right now, no problem. Then you can pick your QBOTF and not worry about him being NFL ready for a year, AND, Alex Smith wouldn't have a choice.

Other than be disruptive to team chemistry, he wouldn't have a choice.

A fourth rounder for a guy that can give us a solid QB as a backup and mentor for our young gun would be a good buy. I don't think he's the type of guy to cause locker room problems. I have faith in Reid that his first question would be just that.

Really? People are crazy. Please say this ouloud and tell me this makes sense to someone?

Alex Smith would rather come to KC with their worst record in football and be a backup, than to stay in sunny SF, while being paid starter money, with the coach that can get the most from him, and learn from and be a SB contender each year?

If he's the type of guy that would ask to be released instead of playing out his contract, he's ABSOLUTELY the type of guy that could cause locker room problems.

What is the obsession with Alex Smith anyway?

The difference between him and say, Jason Campbell, is NEGLIGIBLE.

IF you're talking about them being BACKUPS, that is.

The only way you get a difference out of them is if they're the full-time starter. So be honest, do you really want him as a backup?

I was watching the NFL network last night, they re-played the Thanksgiving Night Ravens and 49ers game. Smith got sacked like seven or eight times in that game. He is Casshole all over again. I'd really rather have just about anybody else.

What team chemistry??? And if he isnt a cancer now, after being benched when he was winning, why do you think he would now? Because he got traded?

Honstly, I'm in this for the long haul. I want Geno Smith to be drafted and turn out to be Tom Brady. Fact is, we don't know who or what we would get with Geno or any other rookie, and right now, we have NO ONE on the roster capable of winning in the NFL. If I'm a GM trying to build the best team I can, I have no problem giving Alex Smith a try for a 4th rounder and letting him compete to be the starter. If Geno can't beat him out, then we at least have a guy. I don't want to go the Geno route without some capable backup that can win games. I'd be fine with Jason Campbell as well, but haven't heard his name tossed around at all.

They're talking about trading him in the week leading up to the Super Bowl.

He may not be a MAJOR distraction but him asking for his release at this point was a selfish thing to do.

He wants to be a starter. Bringing him as anything less is just BEGGING for trouble.

Why do it?

I want someone to tell me why bringing in Smith SOLELY as a backup is the best option out there.

The only problem with your scenario is that it just isn't based in reality.

If they draft a QB #1 overall, he's going to be starting no later than mid-season.

Which means you wasted a draft pick on a guy that's going to be asking for his release 12 months from now.

That's a complete waste.

The reason you haven't heard Campbell's name yet is because he's going to be a free agent and free agency hasn't started.

He has shown only model teammate attitude. Your putting attittude on him that he hasnt exhibited at all. His team is praising him for his role right now, even after he supposedly asked to be traded. Which isnt the stupidest idea on his part and quite frankly we dont know the whole story.

Who would be a better back up that could step in and win? Jason ****ing Campbell? What has he done? Smith as at least won this year, beeen a model teammate, coach and mentor to a young rising star (Which what we want in a back up for our young QBOTF). Also, took the team to the NFC Championship last year.

Now, as a FA would he want to come here? Doubt it. I wouldnt. So I get that arguement, but if we traded for him? I wouldnt be too pissed.

Schefter was just trying to get his name back in the news. Because it makes zero sense for the Jets to trade for him. They need to cut salary. Alex Smith is making more than Revis. Sanchez is making bank.
