Chiefs Alternate History Madden Franchise: Can Joe Montana take KC back to the SB?

Return of Mals: Joe Montana Edition

Downloaded a 1993 NFL Roster updated for Madden 17 last night.

All teams and players are edited to reflect their 1993 counterparts. Steve Young, Troy Aikman, Warren Moon and JOE MONTANA are all on this roster along with every other starter AND backup from 1993. This roster is so accurate it has Andre Ware on the Lions. Titans serve as the Oilers, Texans and Jags are full of generic assholes.

Chiefs have Joe, Marcus, DT, Smith, Carter, etc. Whoever did this is a genious and even got the player equipment right. Faces are computer-generated and coaches are wrong, but can't have everything.

The goal: get the Chiefs back in the SB with Montana at starting QB. Franchise will run until Joe retires. Not allowed to switch QBs.

LET'S DO THIS!

Good morning. As you know, the Kansas City Chiefs fell short of their goal of an unprecedented third straight Super Bowl this season.

There is no doubt in my mind, had Eric Moulds, our fantastic rookie receiver who had over 300 yards receiving in the playoffs, gained one more yard, Joe Montana would have beaten the Jets in overtime and we would now be going to Denver to own those frauds again.

But that isn't what happened, and we lost our chance at making history. No doubt, part of our lost chance was due to some unfortunate injuries that unexpectedly brought this fantastic roster to it's knees in Week 17. We're very much looking forward to getting those players back in 1997. Especially Zach Thomas. What a fantastic draft pick he was.

Our goal has not changed. We're here to get back to, and win, the Super Bowl. Of course, we'll need a quarterback to do that, and we haven't heard from Joe Montana if he'll be back next season or not. We'll give Joe some time, but of course he is going to be 41.

To that end, the search will begin in earnest for a younger quarterback. Whether that player comes from the draft, or free agency, or even a trade, who can say? I can tell you this: we will explore every avenue in addressing the position.

And now, our owner Lamar Hunt has a few words to say.

Hey everyone, just wanted to let you know we're very pleased with the job Carl and Marty are doing. They've both been signed to three-year contract extensions, which will keep them Chiefs through the 2000 season. Tough break on the injuries this year.

Thanks for coming and don't forget to stop by Worlds of Fun this offseason.

That was good.

Also, if there was one Bronco of all-time I didn't hate, it was Terrell Davis. I have no problems rooting for him here. He was a class act.

The Chiefs choke against the Jets, but it's not near as bad as THIS.

LOL DONKS. Denver blows the #1 seed, sending Cleveland to NY for the AFCCG. The Jets beat CLE, and then take out Dallas in the Super Bowl. The Chiefs feel a lot better about their divisional loss.

John Elway is so distraught over his epic playoff failure he does something rather rash...

The Chiefs lose Joe Montana and Lomas Brown to retirement. Another hole to fill at RT, great!

THE 1997 OFFSEASON

Retirements

Quote:
QB John Elway
G Nate Newton
QB Jim Kelly
RT Lomas Brown
LE Howie Long
WR Irving Fryar
LE Reggie White
OLB Darryl Talley
LG Guy McIntyre
QB Joe Montana
QB Steve Young
Cuts

Quote:
Glyn Milburn
Tracy Rogers
Mark Collins
Tom Sims
Quinn Early
The Chiefs choose not to offer Santo Stephens or Pellom McDaniels contracts. Stephens will be a big ticket FA on the open market, but with three starting linebacker spots filled, the Chiefs don't need him.

The Chiefs DO re-sign HB Tim Hall to a cheap 3-year deal, and then do the only logical thing with Will Shields:

Shields tag will cost only $9M. This leaves the Chiefs with $25M in cap room. Free agency is a rash of big names and the Chiefs zero in on one target who is NOT getting away.

Spoiler!

Hell yeah, son. The deep ball is coming back to Kansas City. ROCKET signs a 5-year, 34M deal. The Chiefs also ink cheap deals with:

Quote:
TE Marcus Pollard
DE Vaughn Booker
QB ELVIS GRBAC
QB Jeff Garcia
FREE AGENCY

Quote:
TB Michael Strahan
DAL Deon Figures
BAL Dan Marino
BAL Renaldo Turnbull
DEN Boomer Esiasion
DEN Darren Perry
CAR Santo Stephens
IND Darryl Hobbs
The Chiefs then address their RT position with a stroke of Carl Peterson genious.

BOOM.

THE 1997 DRAFT

The Chiefs have the #25 pick and trade it for a 1998 first, plus a third and fourth in the 1997 draft.

And now they slay the draft:

Quote:
2.16 TE 74 OVR Freddie Jones
3.30 OLB 74 OVR Dwayne Rudd
4.10 SS 73 OVR Mike Minter
4.23 FS 76 OVR Darren Sharper
4.25 WR 76 OVR Albert Connell
6.25 CB 72 OVR Denard Walker
Sharper in the 4th! What a steal. The Chiefs have an opportunity to draft Tony Gonzalez but picked the wrong tight end. They also passed on Trevor Pryce. Such is life.

THE TOP 11

Quote:
1 Danny Wuerffel
2 Ronde Barber
3 Jason Ferguson
4 Jason Taylor
5 James Farrior
6 Mike Vrabel
7 Derrick Mason
8 Ike Hilliard
9 Renaldo Wynn
10 Dan Neil
11 Jake Plummer
Plummer goes to the Texans, who also get Gonzalez. Best draft hauls:

Quote:
MIA
DT Darrell Russell, OLB Mike Vrabel, MLB Derek Smith, WR Keith Poole

NYG
Orlando Pace, James Farrior

NE
Corey Dillon, Shawn Springs, Frank Middleton, Sam Garnes

BAL
Bryant Westbrook, Ross Verba, Duce Staley, Dan Neil

TEX
Tony Gonzalez, Jake Plummer

SD
Sam Madison, Marcus Robinson, Reidel Anthony
With training camp about to start, the Chiefs have a decision to make at QB. And then, with the news of Rocket Ismail in Kansas City changing the winds, THE UNTHINKABLE HAPPENS:

Spoiler!

LET'S DO THIS.

I was so very, very close to getting Tony Gonzalez. The top two tight ends were both second rounders, so I knew I would be able to get one of them.

Even though he was the 2nd rated TE on the board, I decided that the guy who had B+/B/B- scouting traits was going to be the Gonzalez doppleganger, vs the guy who had a C mixed in on his last trait. He also had a faster 40 time so I figured his OVR was definitely going to be higher.

I let the first guy go, and then as soon as a TE-needy team was up, I traded up to 2.16 (it only cost me a 7th and next year's 4th) and took my guy.

Then at the end of the draft I looked through all the overalls and kicked myself. The top guy was a 77 vs my 74, so I get Freddie Jones, which isn't altogether horrible. Just picked the wrong guy.

The Texans are going to be lethal with Plummer, Gonzalez, Terry Glenn and Chris Warren.

As for Joe, Bob Whitfield might have something to say about that. I'm counting on a HUGE resurgence of my passing game now that my best WR isn't a rookie (ROCKET, BABY) and Desmond Howard isn't dropping half the balls thrown his way. What a terrible, terrible signing he was. But at least he was cheap.

You're going to trade up for one of the QBs next year and get stuck with Leaf. I'm calling it.

While this is certainly possible, the probability is very low.

I would have to be completely fooled by the CPU when it generates the QB class, which would take something like the top 3 quarterbacks having two out of their 3 accuracy ratings remain a mystery, or having it generate no first-round prospects at all, which definitely makes things harder. A lot of times the best QB in a draft class comes in the 4th round.

It's more likely that I **** up and don't pick Manning, and end up with the second or third best QB from that class, which would be Matt Hasselbeck or Brian Griese.

If that happens, well, Donovan McNabb and Daunte Culepper are coming out in '99.

Also, another possibility is that the CPU team sitting at #1 or #2 simply won't take my trade offer of three 1sts. Then I may have to gamble on trading for a lower top 10 pick, and then try flipping THAT for the #1 pick.

The rich 1997 UDFA crop falls as so:

Sammy Knight to Redskins
Matt Lepsis to Chargers
Joe Andruzzi to Cardinals
Pat Williams to Colts
Bryan Robinson to Panthers
Jake Delhomme to Bills
Jon Kitna to Falcons
Priest Holmes to Bears

DON'T SAY IT'S PRESEASON, THE DEEP BALL IS COMING BACK TO KANSAS CITY, CUZ
