Mad Men is a character study of "Don Draper". As they creators delve deeper in Don's psyche, some of your questions will be answered.

Personally, I think this show is as good as the Sopranos at its height of creativity and the show only gets better in seasons two and three.

IMO, they aren't there to tell a story or have some good ending. They are there for clever writing, funny jokes, and laughs. It's not a soap opera, it's just a never ending comedy. They have set it up end, but I expect them to milk it as long as they can.
