Been a while since we had a guns n' ammo discussion.


Some of you are AR shooters Im sure. Im looking at a Colt 6920. Will be my first AR. Picked up a Glock this fall and really enjoy shooting it. Any feedback on that weapon?



Anyone else been in a buy/sell/trade mood with hardware?

Anyone have experience with red dot or holographic sites? I've determined my first two accessories will be a pod grip and optics of some sort. The EOTech holographic sites, while nice, are too pricey for my tastes right now. The shop where I bought my gun had one for $100 that I liked...I think the brand was TruGlo? Does anyone know if those are any good?

Is the .45 ACP the best stopping power cartridge trade-off of power vs. size of weapon?

Should I get a M1911A2 or what? If 45 ACP is the best, what handgun would you buy?

Personally, I don't see the point of getting an assault rifle that's little more than a glorified BB gun. I guess it would be okay as a varmint gun or a fun/economical plinker, but not something I'd reach for if somebody else with a gun was shooting at me.

Almost everything I've read about the .45ACP says it has the highest first shot stop percentage among handgun calibers.The 185-200-230 gr projectile is heavy,slow moving,and expands quickly making it a perfect self/home defense caliber.The most important factor to me is 7-8 rounds of .45 vs 10-17-19 rounds of 9mm that is standard.To be honest I'm very comfortable with 8 rounds of .45,as if it is well placed it should only take one.

As far as the 1911 goes,that is my favorite hand gun of all time,but it is a lot of gun and a high end model is not cheap.It also depends on what you intend to do with it,carry it,home defense etc..I don't attempt to conceal any of my 1911's,they're simply too big,but the 3,and 4 inch models are quite easier to hide.

IMO the which one is best question is an all day discussion.I prefer american made guns(Ruger S&W) but Sig makes a really nice .45 (P220) in several models but they don't come cheap.My S&W M&P 45 and Ruger P90 are my 2 favorite non 1911 .45's that I own.I suggest that you go to a range and spend a few weeks shooting every .45 you get your hands on before even thinking about buying one.

I'd say Bane covered the .45acp pretty well. I'd just add that you might stay away from 3" models until you get used to the caliber. 3" barrels are louder, kick a bit more and can jam (FTF/FTE) if you don't have a firm grip.

The 1911 is my favorite also. I've seen/owned AMT Hardballers for less than $400 and had Kimbers for over $1000. There's also 1911's higher end models for more dough, that I've shot, but have not personally owned.

I also have a Ruger P90 (love it), a Taurus 3" for CCW, and lastly, a Hi-Point. The Hi-Point is cheap ($165) and shoots damn good. However, it weighs as much as a new-born, looks cheap, and the grip sucks. But it gets the job done.

I like the 45acp - a lot. I've got a couple of 1911's, and like them as well. They're easy to carry (slim) and modern versions are pretty much trouble free. Got a few other .45 models - a Ruger 345, a Springfield XD (the 'Croatian Creation' and a Glock .45 GAP. For a 'beginner' with the .45 I seriously recommend the Glock. YMMV, but that's what I tell 'em. Easy to shoot, pretty much indestructible. The GAP ammo I shoot is a little different than the .45 ACP, it's a propietary round that Glock invented. A little shorter, a little more expensive but it still puts that lovely .45 hole in stuff - and for many folks it seems to be easier to shoot well. As I said, YMMV, but if you're looking at .45's...look at both of 'em.

Or I can purchase an AR 15 with unlimited upper options for much less.

Here's something to consider.

The Sig 556 is a great, awesome gun. Certainly a better weapon than the one I have. I'm not knocking it all.

However, the one thing about a 556 is that you can't upgrade the base components, add and upgrade features, like you can with a regular AR. Obviously there's really not much need to upgrade a $1,500 Sig. But upgrading is fun.

One of my friends has a 556. He loves it. But he sees all his friends that have regular ARs, like me, having a blast going through the upgrading process, researching the next cool thing to switch out, the fun they have the first time they try out the latest modifications, and he's kind of bummed out that he can't do that - so much so, in fact, that he's considering getting a base AR so he can join in the fun.

Just something to consider.

We already have 4 AR's in the family, so maybe I am just trying to be different.

The gas piston return is a big plus, besides being a lot cheaper then a g/p return AR.
