The 49ers have expressed to others that a deal for QB Alex Smith is effectively complete. Can't be finalized til league year begins 3/12

Jason La Canfora ‏@JasonLaCanfora

so it's not official, both clubs view it at as it's effectively done. I do not know the other team. KC and JAX are 2 teams that make sense

I really doubt that this trade is even close to being completed. I think there are too many motives to float this story out there.

1. Smith's agent is trying to get his name out there to drum up interest.
2. 49ers not getting a lot of interest and are trying to drive up the price.
3. Chiefs are throwing it out there to force the Eagles hand on Nick Foles.

The timing of everything is just fishy (along with the crappy sources). With the combine going full steam and today being the day QBs throw, I doubt Reid and/or Dorsey were dedicating tons of time negotiating for Alex Smith. The niners would surely be able to get more for Alex Smith after the draft.

Im grasping at ****ing straws here.
Its hopeful thinking...but there really cant be many suitors wanting to trade for Alex Smith when NOBODY wanted to sign him last offseason when no picks were involved.

Also, SF has to get down to the below the salary cap by the time the new league year starts or they cant do anything with their URFAs...maybe they know they have to take something, or just cut him.

Maybe our offer constitutes "something"

/grasping at the same straws you are.

Maybe that's why they're leaking this. We're probably one of the only teams to offer them anything......so they want to try and raise the price.

I sent a letter to clark hunt. Hopefully he feels the same frustration as our fans suffer through each year.

Lets hypothetically say We draft Geno Smith and Alex Smith goes to the Cards. Alex takes the Cardinals to the playoffs for consecutive years but it takes Geno three years to make the playoffs. How would you feel?

yeah, that's what i was thinking.

At that point, i'd have to see what they paid for him. There is a big difference between a 3rd round Alex Smith and a 6th round Alex Smith.

March 12 is forever in the NFL. I've never heard of a deal floated this far in advance that actually became a done deal. Maybe I just have a short memory.

the good news is we will know as soon as the league year starts cause the 49ers need to get Smith's 8.5 million off their books so they can sign guys in FA.

so its not like we wait for this go down on draft day, this only benefits the 49ers prior to FA.

So Alex Smith will be a Chief or he wont be by in March
