Jakeenan Gant signed with Missouri on Wednesday after all.

Gant, a 6-foot-8 forward from Springfield, Ga., was expected to wait until later in the week to sign during a ceremony at his school, but he put pen to paper on his national letter of intent and became a Tiger on the first day of the NCAA’s early signing period.

“Jakeenan really fits our program in all aspects of his game and his approach,” Missouri coach Frank Haith said in a release from Missouri. “He’s an outstanding young man from a great family and just has that competitive drive in everything he does. He was the top player in Georgia as a junior and will keep getting better and better as he matures and adds strength.”

Gant, a senior at Effingham County High School, is ranked No. 47 nationally in the 2014 recruiting class by Rivals.com.

It’s the second straight season the Tigers have landed a top-50 recruit after signing freshman Johnathan Williams III last year.

Gant, who committed to Missouri in August, averaged 17.9 points and 9.3 rebounds along with 4.2 blocks as a junior and is the reigning Georgia AAAAA player of the year after helping the Rebels reach the state semifinals.

“He has the ability to step out and shoot the basketball on the perimeter, defend on all levels of the court and, as he adds that strength, his offensive post game will take that next step,” Haith said. “Jakeenan can be a difference-making scorer and defender both on the wing and in the paint.”

Gant’s signing is a welcome signal that the Tigers’ recruiting efforts in Southeastern Conference territory are beginning to pay dividends.

“We are really excited to be adding a player of Jakeenan’s caliber to our program, and we have started making a recruiting name in the Southeastern Conference footprint in a short period of time,” Haith said. “The fan support we have, the facilities and the academic track record at Missouri makes this a great place to continue your education. I am very excited about the future of our program, especially now that we have balanced out our recruiting classes.”

Namon Wright, a 6-foot-4 shooting guard from Los Angeles, is also expected to sign with the Tigers this week. He is ranked 87th overall by Rivals.com

It really is something of a middle finger to Anderson, isn't it?

I was surprised to see Haith say that.

Remember your own words vis-a-vis Missouri football: experienced three stars beat raw four stars.

The sweet spot is to get players who will be NBA players, but who don't have the ridiculous upside to leave after 1-2 years.

I'm not sure I believe it in basketball.

So much of basketball can be boiled down to one guy simply out-athleting another. It's like baseball in that it's a team sport comprised largely of individual achievements. Football, as the ultimate team sport, pays huge dividends to team-building.

But in basketball, greatness doesn't take as long to develop or lie dormant for as long. Jabari Parker was immediately a badass. Wiggins took all of one half to look pretty damn great. Kentucky managed to win a title with nothing but noobs....though they did lose another one largely because of said youth.

It doesn't always work, but in college hoops, raw talent is usually going to trump team development and/or experience. Especially when these kids have played together for 30+ games by the time the post-season rolls around.

To me, that's why the regular season doesn't mean a damn thing. With so many teams making the post-season, it's essentially 30 games of pre-season for a 3 week tournament.

Those are all good points, and college BB lends itself towards pure talent over execution, but it is also a sport played by very immature individuals, and that's why so many super teams often disintegrate. It takes a very rare assemblage of froshes to play like 2011 Kentucky.

Kansas always gets the recruits, it sucks but that's the way it goes. You're right though, you can't help but envy it.

That's true. I hope they never win another conference game in football, them bastards always suck but they had to emerge in '07 and ruin our season even though we beat them.

Missouri added a second player to its 2014 class Friday when shooting guard Namon Wright signed a national letter of intent.

Wright, a 6-foot-4 scorer from Pacific Hills High School in Los Angeles, joins Jakeenan Gant as the Tigers early signings. Gant, a 6-foot-8 forward from Springfield, Ga., signed Wednesday.
Wright, who chose Missouri over hometown suitors UCLA and Southern California, led Pacific Hills for the California Division IV state championship last season, averaging 15.6 points, 7.3 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game.
“Namon just has a great feel for the game and similar to Wes Clark, he is always on the attack, looking for a way to beat you,” Tigers coach Frank Haith said in a release from the athletic department. “He is a bigger guard, which we like, and has great length that allows him to excel defensively.”
Haith said Wright’s jump shot “is still developing,” but lauded his ability as a slasher.
Rivals.com ranks Wright as the No. 87 overall recruit in the nation.
“Namon gives us very good size on the perimeter and he has an attacking mentality on the offensive end,” Haith said. “He will keep developing as a shooter, but right now he puts a lot of pressure on his opponents because of his ability to score off the bounce.”
Wright played with Missouri freshman Johnathan Williams III during the 2012 Pangos All-America camp.
“This was a very good class for us and fits two needs in our program,” Haith said. “We needed some additional size and athleticism in the paint and Jakeenan is one of the country’s more athletic hybrid forwards. He can run the court, finish in transition and he has the chance to be a big time presence on the defensive end.”

If Clarkson and Jabari Brown both bounce to pro ball after this season, Missouri is going to be woefully short on guards that can score/shoot.

I think we're also starting to see the type of team Haith likes to put out there take shape... Large and athletic but not particularly skilled. Sure, they can teach skills. But it still worries me a bit, especially with the rules changes coming and making zone such a viable option moving forward.
