Likely baseless rumor: Luck wants out

It's mostly just some Twitter rumbling and an article here and there in Indy, but there are some quiet rumors (evidently over Luck's objection) that suggest that he may want out.

So the question becomes, what is the trade value of a quarterback who may not be healthy at any point this year and will be 29 next year, who has a bit of an alarming injury history now and who's contract is now not an asset of any sort?

Is it a kings ransom kind of deal; like could/should Cleveland offer that absurd haul of picks they have in the coming year+ for him. Or is it far less than that due to the injury concerns, contract and the fact that he's simply not a young QB anymore?

Now onto the Chiefs related question - if the Colts approach us in the off-season and offer him for Smith and Mahomes (Smith would presumably be necessary for cap purposes on our end), what's the consensus?

Personally, if the medicals check out, I pull the trigger and not think twice. It would theoretically shorten our window by it may also push it open wider in the coming years. Then again, that contract also likely costs us Marcus Peters given that he'd be a FA prior to Mahomes needing to be paid. Maybe Hill. Maybe Jones. Maybe Morse. The bottom line is that it will cost us at least one member of this young core in all likelihood.

So do you spin the wheel and take your chances that Mahomes can be 90% as good as Luck while being healthier and cheaper? Or do you grab the guy who looked like potentially the best QB in football at times and worry about the consequences later?

It's a closer call than I imagined it might be at first blush.

Luck has disappointed greatly but that dysfunctional organization has a lot to do with it.

If, and it's a big IF, Luck gets traded I think AZ, CLE, 49ers and Washington assuming they need a QB after whats his face walks after this year are more likely.
Cleveland doesn't need Luck.

If the Redskins have a losing season, I expect Snyder to completely clean house and start over.

Arizona might be a possiblity, if Arians decides to coach next year. If not, they probably start completely over.

10. When will we see Andrew Luck? Given the Colts’ state of transition, the plan is not to activate him until his shoulder is absolutely 100 percent. I’m told, as I write this, that Luck is working through a strength and throwing program, as part of his effort to get back.

I wonder if he even plays this year?
Speculation yesterday was that he may not.

There is no other Quarterback I'd rather have to lead the Chiefs next 15+ years than Patrick Mahomes II.

Luck is the most overrated QB in the NFL. Injury prone. Turnover prone. Swamp Ass prone.

I'm pretty shocked by the results. Just a year ago Luck was considered a more athletic Peyton Manning in the making. Now people are ready to stick with a guy who hasn't played an NFL game yet. It's just surprising.

This "rumor" was mostly started by PFT.

As far as your poll question goes I would stick with Pat and see how that plays out. We all have been dying to draft our own franchise QB and I am anxious to see how well he plays.

I’ve recently been trying to figure out the craziness in Indianapolis involving the status of quarterback Andrew Luck. Along the way, I’ve developed four different theories for the lingering absence of Luck from practices and games, along with the apparent absence of a plan to replace him while he heals from January surgery.

They are: (1) good, old-fashioned incompetence; (2) a conscious willingness to give Luck a redshirt year if necessary; (3) an effort by new G.M. Chris Ballard to tie one hand behind coach Chuck Pagano’s back in order to make it easier to fire him; and (4) a possible desire by Luck to run out of Indy while he can still walk.

While sounding this out on various platforms (including PFT Live and Wednesday’s PFT Live afternoon podcast), I made it clear that it’s just speculation, arising primarily from what I’d want if me or my kid were employed by the Colts. Look at what they’ve given him or, more accurately, what they haven’t given him. As Luck enters the front end of the prime years, his career is currently being wasted, putting him far closer to Archie than Peyton on the Manning scale.

Speaking of Archie, the notion that Luck possibly wants out can be traced to the Manning family patriarch, sort of. Luck’s father, Oliver, was a teammate of Archie’s. Oliver knows how the business works, and he’d surely prefer his son to emerge from the NFL in one piece. More than 13 years ago, Archie engineered a San Diego stiff arm for Eli; why shouldn’t Oliver at least consider an Andrew extrication from Indy?

Apparently, others have been taking it beyond speculation, actually couching it as rumor. Which has prompted Luck’s camp to try to shoot down any talk of discontent. Wednesday night, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media said on the air that Luck’s agent/uncle (or uncle/agent) called the non-rumor rumor “simply false.”

It’s odd that Luck’s camp would even address the situation at this juncture. The fact that it was shot down on the record will serve only to get more people thinking and talking about it.

Which could be part of the master plan. If so, at least someone would have a plan of some sort when it comes to the current state of Andrew Luck’s career.

And before pooh-poohing a possible trade because of the cap hit, consider this: The net charge for trading him in 2018 would be lower than the net charge for keeping him.

Besides, if he decides that he truly wants out (which frankly he should), why would the Colts want to keep him around? If the quarterback isn’t all in, things will only get worse. If, based on Sunday’s outcome in L.A., that’s even possible.

Quarterbacks aren't pitchers. Shoulder injuries shouldn't be that alarming, and I don't know why anyone would doubt Luck given the number of games he's won with absolutely abysmal talent around him. That's 2-53 probably a bottom three roster in football, and he won three playoff games with it before getting hurt last year.

Mahomes still hasn't faced anything other than a vanilla defense filled with street free agents. You trade for Luck 1000 times out of 1000.
