Late night bullshit: Chiefs could underachieve for much of the 2016 season.

Just a stream of consciousness thread. Disregard or ignore if you're not feeling the spirit.

I think this Chiefs team has some of the best talent we've seen in a very long time on both sides of the ball. We've got the best quarterback we've had in over a decade. We've got the best RB stable in over a decade. We've got the best WR corps in two decades. We've got strong bookend tackles and a very good center.

Our DL is very stout and can apply pressure. I really like the talent we have at ILB with DJ and Mauga/Wilson/March. We've got maybe the best starting safety tandem in franchise history, maybe, and we have a ton of young talent at CB.

That said, I think this team could seriously get hamstrung by missing Houston for much of 2016. I believe he'll return, but that means we're depending on Hali and Ford for much of the year, and if QBs get time to drop back and survey the field, they can exploit our young corners as they learn on the job.

I think this team, with a fully healthy Houston, can stack up 12-13 wins and threaten to get to the AFCCG. Without Houston until late in the year, I feel they're more of a 10-win survival team that will bank on Houston returning and hitting their full stride by the time the playoffs arrive. At which point, anything can happen.

I don't know where that puts us in the AFCW. I like the talent they have in Oakland but I don't think they're a 10-win team yet. Denver will be in every single game this year due to their defense but I struggle to see Sanchez doing better than 10 wins.

Alex Smith may have turned a corner, maybe. If so, I think that makes up for losing Houston and can elevate us back to being a 12-win team. But my guess is that Alex reverts to being Regular Season Alex and we don't see Playoff Alex again until the Playoffs. It's stunning to me how much better he is in the postseason.

And something worth pointing out, again-- for all of the talk and hype about how good Oakland is all of the sudden... they couldn't even beat us last year with a healthy team when we didn't have Houston, and Hali only played a handful of snaps and had a broken thumb anyway..

Not to mention Jamaal Charles, who has been a true Raider killer since Reid got here.

That says a lot about what the Chiefs have here.

With a bunch of big time passing games on the schedule early in the year...SD, Houston, Pittsburgh, NO...we are going to NEED Houston to be on the field and "himself" early in the season to try and get a division lead and make a run.

These young corners have lots of talent, but growing pains (especially early on) are to be expected and the best way to help them will be to put constant pressure on QBs to lessen the time those guys need to cover.

I know I generally lean towards the side of an optimist, but I like our chances of being good enough to go into the bye 3-1/4-0 if we have Houston...that's probably more like 2-2 without him.

I figure maclin and kelce have 1000 yard years. Need conley, wilson, Streater etc to have atleast 500.
After Maclin and Kelce it's a massive drop off. Like the 5th option in 2003, Dante Hall, caught for just as much Albert Wilson did in this current group last season.

The backs have the potential to go for 600 I think as a platoon. Charles did it once in his career but I really doubt he's going to get that by himself off his 2nd ACL injury. Maybe he comes back a freak, but I think it will be a group effort this year from the backs.

I don't know, man.

Sean Smith
Karl Joseph
Reggie Nelson
Shaq Calhoun
Bruce Irvin
Osemele

That's a lot of upgrades to an already competitive roster.

That's a lot of upgrades to an already competitive roster.
The loss of Charles Woodson, not only with his play but also leadership more importantly, negates a lot of the secondary help basically making it a wash at best.

Irvin isn't in Aldon Smith's world, so we've seen them better in that area.

I mean I get it, they are better, but in terms of our games against them, we are technically adding just as much talent as they are when you consider who was out for us last year.

Oakland is still the team that can't win 9 games until proven otherwise.

Couldn't agree more. They brought Poe back early last year and it took a few weeks before he really got back to form. If you are hurt and not playing well, you end up being "just a guy" out there. Give them the extra few weeks to heal up properly and come back as a solid/dominant player.

Wilson gets a bad rap around here, some deservedly, but he's still an UDFA in his 3rd year. If he progresses from 2nd to 3rd like his 2nd year was, I don't see why he couldn't have 600 yards of wr.

Same with Streater.

But this offense is alot different than that one.

Our defense needs Dee Ford to finally be that guy. Even with knee problems, Tamba should be productive in the first month of the season having all offseason to get healthy.

DL pressure will be very good, especially with Jones rotating, but Ford even being a solid rusher would be tremendous.

@ Houston having a "big time" passing game.

If Brock wasn't putting up huge #'s throwing to Thomas and Sanders, I don't think throwing to Nuke and a couple rookies is going to change that.

What do you expect them to say?
Early is very broad as is ahead of schedule. All those mean is that they don't think it will take the longest amount of time for recovery.

Well, Hopkins is better than those 2. Hell, I could put up decent numbers throwing to that guy. He's awesome.

I wonder if Obrien is a good coach or not so I'm not sure about the Texans, but if he is and if osweiler has a good year, Houston should win that division and be a tough out in the playoffs

The exact opposite is true, actually. Most of Dorsey's recent comments point to Houston being on the field Week 1. And I'm not sure where you're getting these Hali comments, but I'll take Dorsey's pre-draft press conference update over anything Hali has said.

I agree with the first part, but Hopkins had 1,500 yards and 11 TD's last year, and the Texans still didn't have a "big time" passing game.

Also, Thomas and Sanders both had over 1,000 last year.
