Roy Halladay dies in plane crash

Roy Halladay, 40, dies in plane crash in Gulf of Mexico
3:18 PM CT
ESPN.com

Roy Halladay, a two-time Cy Young Award-winning pitcher who retired from baseball nearly four years ago, has died in a plane crash in the Gulf of Mexico off Florida. He was 40.

The Pasco County Sheriff's Department confirmed that a small single-engine aircraft piloted by Halladay was reported down in the Gulf of Mexico earlier Tuesday afternoon.

Halladay recently received his pilot's license and tweeted photos last month of himself standing next to a new ICON A5 plane, which was the model of aircraft that was recovered Tuesday in the Gulf.

Halladay was an eight-time All-Star and went 203-105 with a 3.38 ERA in his 16-year career with the Toronto Blue Jays and Philadelphia Phillies. He threw a perfect game during the 2010 season and a no-hitter that postseason.

One of the pitchers in the best pitching duel game ever in a NLDS.

This happened in my neck of the woods. You'd be surprised how often it occurs. In general, flying is not a hobby sport. When these private plane deaths happen, it's rarely the pilot who's been flying for 20+ years.

Here is some additional info......

Retired MLB star Roy Halladay, 40, was killed this afternoon when his Icon A5 went down in the Gulf of Mexico not far from his home in Tarpon Springs, Florida. The Pasco Sheriff's Office Marine Unit responded to a call reporting the crash around 1:00pm.

Halladay was a two-time Cy Young winner, eight-time All-Star and likely Hall of Fame inductee even before his tragic death. Halladay pitched for the Toronto Blue Jays and the Philadephia Phillies during his 16-year career. He took delivery of the A5 just last month and had expressed his joy at flying the plane on his social media accounts, recounting how he loved to fly it low over the water like a fighter plane.

The crash marks the second fatal A5 accident in the last five months. In May, two Icon employees were killed when the A5 they were flying crashed after apparently accidentally flying into a no-exit canyon adjacent to Lake Berryessa in California. Icon had recently issued cautions to its owners about flying the plane low and counseled caution in low-level operations. The details of the crash are not yet known, but the avionics in the A5 will likely reveal many data points about the accident flight. The NTSB plans to be onsite this evening to launch its investigation.

We will update this story as more information becomes available.

Side note - did anyone realize Mike Sweeney was a Philly? A picture with him celebrating with Halladay after the 2010 NLDS just hit my twitter feed.

I have absolutely no recollection of that. I remember him going to Oakland for a year and that was that...

Amphibious sport plane with a lot of delays.

Sport planes are spooky on their own, adding water to them (and the tendency to try to skim it) makes them spookier still. And my memory is that the requirements to be a 'sport pilot' are significantly lower than even a VFR pilot, but I could be off there.

BRC is right; 'hobby flying' isn't really a thing that should be done. Dedicate to it or don't do it, IMO. I was a solo flight away from getting my VFR rating and decided I just wasn't going to be willing to put the time and continuous training into it to be comfortable enough so I walked away.

Actually, I do. His last AB in the majors, in the postseason, he got a hit.

An Icon A5 isn't a small plane, it's a mosquito with a small engine.

It's a Sport Pilot qualified airplane with floatplane endorsement. I bet he barely had any quality time.
