Star Trek: Beyond

Paramount just released the trailer to Star Trek Beyond. I am less than pleased overall.

Justin Lin, the director of the last 3 F&F movies, is at the helm of this bullshit and from the tiny snippet of Simon Pegg jumping out of a pod and hanging off the side of a cliff... it looks equally as campy as F&F.

Justin Lin, the director of nothing but remakes and sequels, is also the guy in charge of the reshooting (because there won't be anything new about it) of the Highlander movie.

I love Trek but this new movie series has been largely garbage. Little to no rewatchability at all for either movie. For the first time ever... I am more excited for something Star Wars related than Trek.

This is the Star Trek movie I want to watch.

ST4 - Forget whatever time travel bring people back from the dead bullshit. We give the people what they want... action, ACTION and Trek. Basically two TV episodes shoved into one movie.

It is 2267, three years after Beyond, and the USS Excalibur (Constitution Class) NCC-1664 is near the end of it's 7 month mission to patrol the Romulan Neutral Zone when they hear a distress call coming in from the Klingons new outpost at Khitomer. The new station is currently not fully functional but Romulans are attacking the cargo ships bringing in raw materials, the currently being constructed Camp Khitomer, and a the nearby Klingon settlement. The Excaliber alerts Starfleet and goes off into Klingon space to assist as the Federation and the Klingons have worked out a tenuous alliance.

The newly commissioned USS Constellation (NX-1974/NCC-1974) is on it's way out to relieve the Excalibur but first must rendevoux with the new Enterprise NCC-1701-A to drop off their new helmsman... Jaylah. While making the exchange, there is small talk about how fast the Federation is able to crank out the ships these days and it is mentioned that the Cardassians are providing a lot of the raw material to help us rebuild in exchange for unquestioned rights to a planet in unclaimed space they called B'Hava'El (Bajor), they receive notification of what is taking place at Khitomer and they both jump into action. (We have now seen 2 brand new ships and have seen a 3rd, already commissioned but yet still new to us, ship.) When they arrive, they come into a full on battle scene with the Excalibur fighting valiently against 4 Romulan Bird of Prey (4 ship types on screen), while being assisted by a single Klington D7 battle cruiser (5 ship types).

They valiently fight off the Romulans and the Klingons are now and see them as formidable warriors. The area is quickly secured by more Klingon ships and one more Federation ship comes along (not shown) to drop off Curzon Dax who was the Federation representative at Khitomer. A lot of talking, drinking, and some fighting take place and we get the signing of the treaty and a new dawn in the relationship between the Federation and the Klingon Empire... the Khitomer Accords.

During the talks at Khitomer, the Klingons inform the Federation that the Cardassians are able to supply those raw materials readily because they are a race who thrive on the conquest of species who are not as technologically advanced as they and had recently begun enslaving the people of Bejor and there were rumors of a space station being built. The Exalibur is sent to a Starbase for repairs, the Constellation stays on patrol in the Neutral Zone, and the Enterprise is gifted a cloaking device which is installed by Scotty... as we hear him shit all over himself in glee over new tech while annoying the shit out of a Klingon Engineer who came on board to help him install it asking questions).
While the Enterprise is having its cloak installed, we cut to Starfleet where they have a spirited debate about the Prime Directive, some saying that it is an internal problem to the Cardassians and Bejor had been properly annexed by them so it wasn't any of the Federation's business and others arguing that it went against Federation principals to benefit from slave labor and that they had a moral obligation to try to help the people of Bejor. It is decided that the Prime Directive did not apply and send in the Enterprise to scout shit out.

Back on the Enterprise, with their working cloack, have been en route to Earth to show Starfleet their new toy when they get new orders. They are to go check out this new space station that the Cardassians are building and use it as a cover to find out what is happening with the Bajorans. During the field trip, the Cardassians are more than happy to show off Terak Nor to the crew of the Enterprise. While Kirk takes a tour of the station, Spock and Jaylah are on the surface of Bajor for a closer look and report that things are worse than they could have possibly imagined.

Once all back together, Kirk contacts Starfleet and advises of the situation. A fleet is immediately dispatched to back up the Enterprise but it will be nearly 2 months before the fleet can travel that distance. Unable to sit around for that long and simply monitor the situation, Kirk and co go down to the surface. Jaylah saves the life of a Bajoran woman who was resisting an attack by a Cardassian. After some talking... the Bajoran Resistance is born. The Enterprise begins supplying the Bajorans with weapons with which to carry out sabotage and generally undermine the gathering of slaves.

The fleet is on the Enterprise scanners and Kirk disengages the cloaking device. He immediately received a hail for the Cardassians demanding to know why the Enterprise is there and how it came to have a cloak. As Kirk begins to tell that Starfleet will not concede Bajor to the Cardassians and that they were required to immediately end their occupation of Bajor, the Cardassians begin to open fire on the Enterprise in disagreement with that decision. At that time... the fleet showes up, mops up the few Cardassian war ships there, and takes over Terak Nor and frees the Bajoran's from occupation. Bajor agrees a pact where the Federation will use the space station and in return the Federation makes sure the Cardassians don't come calling again.

For those in the know, this sets up the DS9 wormhole as part of Federation Space.

TMP has grown on me the older I've gotten. I won't go out of my way to watch it, but when its on, I'll enjoy watching it. Insurrection is the one Trek movie that I just can't stomach. To go from First Contact to that, it's like what the heck just happened. Everything about it screams bad TNG tv episode, not a good movie.

V is bad, but it was the first Trek movie I saw in theaters (and remember seeing) as a kid, so there's a fond memory connection that sometimes mentally outweighs Spock's insane half brother, Uhura dancing naked, and alien "god" at the center of the galaxy beyond the great barrier needing to hitch a ride. And I do rather enjoy the last scene with Kirk, Spock, and Bones singing around the campfire and roasting marshmellons...

This was the best movie I have seen in threatens for the summer. I love how it let us forget about into darkness. Definitely deserves more attention.

Saw it a couple nights ago and really enjoyed it. With the reports of troubled production didn't expect it to be nearly this good.

I finally saw this tonight on Amazon Prime.

Whew. What a mess.

Who would create a moon sized base on one side of a nebula without taking like, uh, five minutes to see what's on the other side?

How did the villain (which was a really dopey "reveal") know that Kirk found the "artifact" and why was it even necessary? The Yorktown was completely defenseless, especially to a swarm of 50,000 ships.

How was Krall able to attack the Enterprise, essentially destroy it but not know that Jayla was living on his ship?

How and why was Krall able to abstract energy from living beings to keep himself alive but when he wasn't able to extract said energy, he quickly reverted to his human form?

How did he keep himself from reverting for the previous 120 years and why did he turn into Krall?

How did he become their ruler and why didn't the rest of the race need to extract energy to stay alive? Wouldn't that race eventually eat itself?

The entire thing was an epic cluster****.

The really sad part is that despite all this, it's still the best of the three.

Yep. Loved the first, but this one was the only one that felt like Star Trek to me.

Even the best of the classic Star Trek movies had warts like this, but these warts are forgivable, unlike Into Dumbass.
