Film Breakdown: Chiefs @ Indy

Well, I figured I was overdue for making my football thread. So, I'm going to break down a few games. My availability will coincide with how in-depth these "breakdowns" go. Ideally, there would be a defensive one with alignments +personnel+coverage with additional data on down & distance/ what personnel/alignment the opposing team came out in. The offensive one would likely look like down & distance, alignment, personnel, play call (categorized but unlikely because it takes a bit more time) with the defensive front and coverage.

There'd likely be some snippets as well with my own opinions on some things (e.g. Abdullah started as our ITB safety/Mike in our 2-3-6 in the playoff game and played well) that are likely to be more in depth. If anyone has requests, I'd suggest that you PM me and I'll do my best to watch for what you're interested in.

With that being said, I finished the first half of the playoff game.

Chiefs aligned in a 2-3-6 for 23 snaps, 12 of those being 1st and 10.

Chiefs aligned in a 1-3-7 3 times, all of them on 3rd down and all featured Ron Parker as the additional DB. He blitzed twice IIRC.

Through the first half, we did not align in an odd 3-4 front once. Too bad we can't draft a defensive tackle that will get up the field because he'll be stuck playing the 5 technique the whole game.

Played a lot of Cover 3 the first quarter with Abdullah ITB. Berry played ther a bit more in the 2nd quarter. Berry also got a few snaps as a single high safety.

Played C6 one snap that I recall that got burned for a deep completion. IIRC, it was Lewis' fault. Awesome.

Sometime this weekend I'll hopefully post the full statistical breakdown for the fronts and then start working in the coverages vs Indy alignment/personnel. Probably won't have anymore detailed notes than what I listed above unless people ask for specifics.

This game came down to coaching and running out the clock...

20 minutes up 28 and we continue to throw the ball and stop the clock.. I remember listening to this game on SiriusXM and the Colts announcers where just in awe that a coaching staff would be so willing to continue to give the Colts free timeouts....

Andy Reid with one of the greatest Schottenhiemer moments in the history of the NFL...

If you are going to fail in the playoffs, go full Marty.

Sure, I'm glad they fixed things.

Walker, Owens, McMillian and a healthy Commings will fix a lot of shit. Nobody knows these guys, and everyone around here doesn't think that the team did shit in the 2014 Free Agent market, but Walker will put pressure on the pocket, Owens will be an effective nickel CB and McMillian will bring much needed speed and athleticism to the S position allowing Sutton to free up Berry a lot more. They brought in guys who will immediately help the soft spots on this roster, especially defensively. Not big name guys, but guys who will play and play effectively in this defense.

Like the article said, they will be a better team. Substantially so, especially if they can fix the talent void at the other ILB spot opposite DJ in the draft. (I'm not sold on Mays being that guy, any more than I was Jordan being that guy.)

However, it still doesn't take the bitter taste out of the mouth recalling that second half collapse against the Colts. That one hurt.

Yeah, I'm so far past that anymore...

I guess I see how that could be upsetting for you though.

Would be curious to hear your take on what went wrong the second half. I refuse to watch the game again, but it seemed to me that we were practically playing prevent. Then again, I was drunk and angry. Was the second half collapse due to poor adjustments and bad play calling, or was it the case where either Sutton or Reid ill advisedly made the call for our defense to play super conservative? Or did we make the right calls but our players flat out didn't execute?

Yeah, I don't understand that reaction. I would seriously scale down his contract next go around, but he still has a few good years left in him.

That's what the good teams do, you know. Playing Madden taught us that.
