David Shaw: Kevin Hogan should feel at home in Chiefs' offense

No rookie transition to the NFL is easy, particularly at quarterback.

But David Shaw believes Kansas City Chiefs rookie quarterback Kevin Hogan will have about as smooth a transition as he could hope for. The Stanford coach told reporters at Pac-12 Media Days on Friday that his former quarterback will have plenty of familiarity with the club's offense when training camp commences (Chiefs rookies are slated to open camp on July 26).

"I'm so excited for him, for many reasons. Number one, Andy Reid is one of the better quarterback guys in the league. They have a similar scheme," Shaw said in his press conference.

Hogan (6-foot-3, 218 pounds) threw 27 touchdown passes and only eight interceptions in Shaw's run-based offense as a senior last year. In the 2016 NFL Draft, the Chiefs plucked him in the fifth round. Hogan's senior season was the most effective of his career, and he led Stanford to a Pac-12 Championship. Reid made similar remarks about Hogan's familiarity with the Chiefs' offensive concepts following the draft.

Shaw traced the lineage of the West Coast offense in explaining why Hogan should feel right at home in Reid's offense.

"If you think about the branches of the West Coast offense, where of course it starts with Bill Walsh and Sid Gillman and then goes from Bill now down to Mike Holmgren, and on Mike Holmgren's staff was Andy Reid and Jon Gruden," Shaw said. "I worked for Jon Gruden. Most of our offense is directly down from the Jon Gruden line, whereas Andy Reid has got his own line, so it's really, really similar, but just some different nuances, and a lot of it is familiar to Kevin."

Hogan figures to compete for the No. 2 job in Kansas City behind Alex Smith, who set his career high in passing yardage last year (3,486) as an 11th-year veteran.

It would be funny if Hogan turned out to be a solid starter, because a lot of people liked him, but everybody labeled him a career backup. I can't think of one draft guru that said he could be a starter.

I would love for Hogan to be a great player, but the guy was never more than a game manager in college. The Chiefs should feel fortunate if the guy is good enough to be a third QB.

Well hell, a game manager, you say?

Perfect for KC.
