Teicher: Chiefs agree to contract terms with Travis Kelce and Nico Johnson

Chiefs agree to contract terms with Travis Kelce and Nico Johnson
By ADAM TEICHER
The Kansas City Star
The Chiefs agreed to contract terms with two more of their draft picks, third-round tight end Travis Kelce and fourth-round linebacker Nico Johnson. Seven of their eight draft picks are now under contract. Only tackle Eric Fisher, selected with the first pick in the draft, remains unsigned.

The Chiefs also signed cornerback Vince Agnew, who participated in this week’s mini-camp as a tryout player. The 5-feet-10, 196-pound Agnew played in four games as a backup last year for the Dallas Cowboys. He previously was a college teammate of Fisher’s at Central Michigan.

Kelce, who played in college at Cincinnati, played a lot of snaps in offseason practice and showed potential as a pass receiver. He was the Chiefs’ second tight end behind Anthony Fasano, though he could get some competition for that spot in training camp from Tony Moeaki. Moeaki didn’t participate in offseason practice after having arthroscopic knee surgery at the end of last season.

Johnson, who played in college at Alabama, was a second-team inside linebacker in offseason practice. He could eventually challenge Akeem Jordan for a starting spot at training camp.

Bray makes an impression

Tyler Bray came to the Chiefs in April as an undrafted rookie but finished offseason practice as a strong contender to become their third quarterback behind Alex Smith and Chase Daniel. Ricky Stanzi is also on the roster but Bray was the third quarterback and received more snaps than Stanzi for most of practice.

“He did a real nice job,’’ coach Andy Reid said. “He’s in a good room (with the other quarterbacks). He’s got good examples around him as players and he’s got coaches that have played the game and the position. So he’s embraced that and really focused in. He really improved every day. He was a bit like a sponge, just taking everything in. I was impressed.’’

Charles not worried about new rule

The NFL adopted a new player-safety rule that would penalize a team 15 yards when a ball carrier lowers the crown of his helmet into a defender in the open field. The rule will mostly affect running backs but Jamaal Charles said he wasn’t concerned about it.

“I don’t have any thoughts on that because I never try to lower my head,’’ he said. “I always try to make them miss. That rule doesn’t apply to me.’’
