Mahomes’ girlfriend stepfather dies at Arrowhead today

Her stepfather passed today at the game.

Mahomes’ girlfriend Brittany Matthews shed some light on the situation in a postgame Instagram post, explaining that her stepfather had died after collapsing outside of Arrowhead Stadium before the game.

Sure you do. The Royals didn't tell Edinson Volquez his father died before he started Game 1 of the 2015 World Series. They waited til he came out of the game -- although I believe at his wife's request.

What good does it to tell Mahomes during a game? What's he gonna do -- leave at halftime to comfort his girlfriend? Tell Reid to get Henne warmed up, he's outta there? All that info can do is screw him up mentally. He can find out immediately afterward when he can attend to it, actually do something about it.

Pure speculation on my part, but toward the end of the game when it was evident we were going to win, they showed Pat sitting on the bench. He was just kind of sitting there and not smiling, just kind of looked dazed. Now, at the time, I just thought maybe he was a little pissed off at how they played and all the sacks and pressures. But, in light of the news, maybe he DID know and it was weighing on him. I suppose it will all come out at some point, but who knows?

Most girls don't give a shit if their "step father" dies other than to be there for their mother and ask about a check.

No one has said why he died,was it a freak taking of his life at the worst moment or did he die knowing that his days were numbered. If my "future step son in law" was Patrick Mahomes II, I would be having some serious tailgating fun before the game.

Her actions are hers, she can deal with her own actions being what she wanted to convey but we should all get the **** off the "WTF" train, wish the family best wishes, and find a politician who's words you should dissect.

First of all, it was a WS game. Not a regular season game against a 2-win team. Also, you said everything that needed to be said - in that case, the team didn't inform Volquez because his wife expressly asked them NOT too.

I'd imagine if players deal with deaths in their own family, mahomes should have little issue dealing with a death in an extended family. I'm sure he's devastated, but can't imagine enough that it would affect prep much. Id also imagine that with the bye week coming up, his gf will not put much on mahomes until after the Rams game. I'm not at all concerned that this will be a distraction.

When my mom died I was pretty devastated! My dad is remarried now and if my 'stepmom' died I would feel bad for him, but life would go on! I was sad when my grandparents died! My sister died last year but it wasn't that much of a surprise, she contributed to her own demise! It was sad though!
