For those who seem to be confused. The rental WAS clean. They freaking played Walt by bluffing him into thinking it wasn't clean with a fake barrel of cash buried in Hank's backyard. They knew the particulars of Walt's cash storage because of the information they got from Hule.

They tracked Walt to the money probably through his phone (remember Jesse's insistence that Walt not hang up or he'd be burning all the money).

Yes. He clearly made a decision that he'd rather give up and "lose" than have Hank killed when he called off the hit on Jesse (though I'm not sure what the hell that says about Walt's real feelings/love for Jesse/Hank).

Then he went further when they showed up, trying to "save" Hank from the AB. Once again, Jesse is supposed to be his "son," but he evidently has more feelings of preservation for Hank (who is trying to put him away) than to Jesse. I suppose the reason being that Hank's death would represent "harm" for his family whereas Jesse's death doesn't.
