The State of ChiefsPlanet Broadband

I just had to renew my internet contract with CenturyLink this week. While I'm irritated that their price went up, I'm now up to 80 Mbps, which I can't complain about. (That said, I hardly know why I need more than about 10 Mbps for what I do, but that's beside the point.)

So just for fun, here's a poll about broadband internet.

selected wrong option in the poll.

l get 100 meg of broadband as part of a cable package. I think they charge $75 for that speed as a stand alone service.

I work from home and do Skype video calls. I also watch a lot of online videos. Bet l can take some of it off my taxes too.

300 mb, 1 tb/month. Gigablast could be an option if I don't have to get all new hardware.

You have very few devices going and I'm guessing no 4k or 1080?

60Mbps here. Fiber to the home and I live in the country. Rural telephone co-ops are cool.

I’m at $45 for 100Mb service, but I usually only get 20-30Mb down average.

Me too. But technically that isn't a 1Gbps connection. You will never achieve that actual transfer rate...

Only thing I would say is that they’ll probably deploy aerial on the utility poles. Our telco buried everything. I’ve had a grand total of 30 seconds of internet downtime in 2 years and that was when they had to replace a card in my NID because the phone line wasn’t working.

Dude, $50 for 50Mb is pretty cheap all things considered. Not sure you’ll find much better.

What does the upload do? I don't understand the difference. I'm clueless for the most part on the internets.

Download = streaming video, looking at webpages, downloading files?
Upload = ??

Anything going back out to the internet - hosting (not just playing) online games, voice or video calls (Skype, FaceTime), file sharing, hosting a website, stuff like that. Not normally a big deal for the average home user.

Well, I think the whole Google Fiber thing was more about the sad state of internet speeds and cost in the US compared to other countries due to lack of competition and innovation.... as opposed to the ability to download the internet at any given time.

I pay $55/month for 100mbps, but it also comes with a 300gb/month cap that I can't go over more than 3 times in a rolling year.... granted, I have to stream a lot of live stuff to get close to the cap and haven't hit it yet.

Internet + satellite is about the same as KC and I have fewer internet issues than with TWC, so can't complain, I guess.
