Where did they rank Liberty's hiring of Turner Gill?

I got some decent answers out of it from Saulbad & others. It's why I asked it in the first place. People are calling it a horrible hire. So, someone tell me why the hire is so bad that ESPN, and more than likely others, are calling it the "worst college hire this year". Like I said....I'm in wait and see mode as to determining whether the hire is good or not. Why is it so horrible? |

You can already sense the tone change of the purple pussies. You can tell they don't like KU having Weis.

honestly, he may be a decent coach, but here would be my issues if I was a KU fan: a) contract : didn't KAI learn from the Gill contract debacle? b) loyalty: Weis has none. Read the presser from each stop before KU: Glad to be here, gonna be here a long time, etc. But he is quick to pack and run c) scheme : likes a pro offense. Can be done in college at the right school. KU is NOT a pro-school. As for his offensive mind, it's great in the NFL, but see above...not a solid bet in NCAA. Just peruse stats at Florida this year. If 4* Florida players struggle, how do you expect 2* kids to do? d) Weis' KU plans : 5 years? REALLY? Did you REALLY just announce to the world that you and your wife talked it over and you're here for 5 years just so you can get to retirement age? That would make me livid as a KU fan. e) South Bend - Weis had okay results in getting recruits to ND, but they lacked development, hence the strong start (on another guys players) and then a sharp decline. Again, with recruits markedly better than KU will see any time soon. f) Staff - Weis is getting the band back together. Hiring several former staffers. Thats great if they were a solid staff before, but the results at ND don't make this a lock. Add in Grunny - a pretty damn good player, and apparently good high school coach. Was allegedly offered an assitant (admin) job on Weis' staff at ND, although now seems to be a bit revisionist in saying it was the OL job, not what I recall reading prior to his hire at KU, but whatever. Well known recruiter in KC, can possibly draw some in based on pedigree from elsewhere, only time will tell if he can coach and recruit at the next level. For the above reasons, us outsiders are looking at this, and the KU fan reception, and scratching our heads. I mean, no offense, but I guess if you're a fat girl in college who gets asked on a date by a creep, you're all excited while everyone else who actually dated in high school says no thanks. Consider this - if Weis fails in 3 years, over the last 6 years and 3 coaches KU will have paid out over $21.5 MILLION in salary to it's head coaches just for the priveledge of firing them. Consider this - Weis' salary puts him at about 17th in the nation in pay. Do you think the KU job demands that? Do you think Weis can deliver?

Those are all pretty valid concerns. But we just endured 2 years of TURNER ****ING GILL.
I'd be happy if they hired you. Sarcasm aside, valid concerns. I guess didn't realize his salary was so high, comparatively. Either way, my take is this. We are KU. We are not going to get top talent. If we are going to take the step to the next level, we're going to have to grow one similar to the way we did Mangino. But the problem is Turner Gill absolutely assraped the entire program. The odds of a n00b coach taking the program from where it is and grow with it is very small IMO. So the administration (at least the way I see it) is trying to bring in an established guy and get the program back up to a reasonable level, and the next guy can hopefully take it to the next level. From my perspective, it is very similar to what KSU is doing with Snyder. They tried a coach. He was a ****off. So they bring in Snyder to get the program respectable again for the next head coach. KUs program was in much worse shape and KU doesn't have a Snyder. So they went with Wies. Both are not multi-decadal options. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to find the coach that will take KU to the next level and be here 20 years, but is ****ed the hell up as KU football is after Turner Gill, I think the likelihood of that is very low. The hire is not optimal, but I can see what the administration is doing, and quite frankly don't mind. If Weis can get us to consistently .500 after the 5 years, its is a major win IMO. |

Everybody knows why Teechubbya likes Weis. Similar girth. (and Weis probably has a book that details the upcoming FEMA camps. Although I don't think Weis has moved his family to Canada yet in order to be closer to the concentric rings of the

Contract: Apparently we didn't learn from the first mistake, I agree. Loyalty: I'm pretty sure everyone knows that this is a short term hire in the hopes that he can turn the program around. If he is successful, it will hopefully make the job more appealing to coaches at the next search. Scheme: This one concerns me a bit. I dislike the spread offense and would prefer to watch a pro style, but can he get the players to KU to actually run it effectively? Also, if he does get the pro offense running effectively at KU, when he leaves in 5 years, is the next coach going to want to change back to the spread? KU plans: Again, I don't think anyone thought this was a long term hire. |

While I think his scheme won't be a good fit for KU, I'd be equally worried about the amount of time and energy that Charles is going to put into recruiting. To a certain extent, ND can recruit itself, and obviously KU is damn near a complete opposite of this for several reasons.
But as my purple friend from Ireland said, he's better than what you had. |

Five years is a reasonable amount of time for a coach. Remember the "SLTH" mantra from KU fans prior to the Cats elevating Frank? SZ was smart to realize that.
Weis is better than what you had. How many former players has he run off? |
