Next Xbox reveal due 21st May, costs $500 or $300 with a subscription, reports suggest Microsoft will reveal its next-generation Xbox at an event on 21st May, multiple reports have suggested. The console will launch in "early November", seasoned Microsoft analyst Paul Thurrot has revealed. These details have been independently backed up by The Verge. Named just "Xbox", Microsoft's machine will be "expensive" and cost around $500 (roughly £326, although likely higher in the UK). A lower price $300 (£195) model will also be available with some form of subscription. Regarding the console's rumoured "always-online" component, Thurrot reiterated what we knew already - that previous Microsoft design documents have mentioned the feature. "Looking at some of the stuff I got a long time ago, it actually says 'must be internet-connected to use' in the notes," Thurrot claimed. "And that's all I have, but it does say that." Recently-leaked internal documentation dated to last year referenced the console's "always on, always connected" design. Microsoft was coy in its apology for comments made by senior employee Adam Orth last week that appeared to support an "always on" console. The company's statement was careful to apologise for Orth's poorly chosen words while steering clear of addressing the subject in general. Thurrot's report also mentioned two other unannounced Xbox-branded machines. One, code-named "Yumo", was to be an Xbox device purely for entertainment apps, rather than games. The product has seemingly been canned to avoid confusing consumers. The other machine is a new budget-priced Xbox 360 model, code-named "Stingray". Due for release later this year, the device will cost just $99 (£65). Thurrot suggested this may mean Microsoft's new Xbox would not play Xbox 360 games. Microsoft told Eurogamer it "does not comment on rumour or speculation". |

Same here.
I don't plan on getting either the XBox 720 or PS4 for a while after they are released. However, I'm already leaning towards getting the PS4, because it's just reeruned to pay for netflix and then pay Microsoft to use it, and if they were to implement an always online function then it would be a no brainer to get the PS4. |

How is the subscription to make the console cheaper a bad thing?

But hey, if they want to lose that money to try to grab the people that are 50/50 between PS/Xbox, all the better for us gamers. I'm one of those 50/50 gamers. I love my 360, but I also loved all my PS consoles before. I don't mind paying for the gold membership personally, I do the family one and get 4 Live id's for $100 - or basically $2.10 a month per person. I can understand that people don't want to pay that though. Ahh well, going to be fun to see who wins my dollars next go round. |

Yeah. I want them to do what Sony did - keep the controller pretty much identical and replace the Xbox button with a small touchscreen. BAM!

I was a Playstation guy all the way up until this generation's consoles. I ****ing HATED Xbox controllers when they first came out; nothing felt more right than the PS controllers. I ended up getting a 360 a few years ago because my friends all had them and fast forward a few years, I can't **** with PS controllers anymore.. Just doesn't feel right.
I also don't give a shit about paying for LIVE membership. I'll wait a few months to see which console appears best and I'll probably buy that one. I'm leaning PS4 though. I would have bought a PS3 if it weren't for my doucher friends. |
