Robert Redford In Talks To Star In ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’
Marvel Surprise: Robert Redford In Talks To Star In ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’
EXCLUSIVE: Here is a fun Marvel scoop. I’m hearing that Robert Redford is in discussions to join the cast of Marvel’s Captain America: The First Avenger, the sequel that brings Chris Evans back as the shield-carrying superhero. Redford is in talks to play a senior leadership role in S.H.I.E.L.D., the superhero collective run by Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury character. Joe and Anthony Russo are directing the film from a script by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, whose Marvel script credits include Captain America: The First Avenger and the upcoming Thor: The Dark World. The sequel will be released by Disney April 4, 2014. In between running his Sundance empire, Redford most recently starred in All Is Lost, the J.C. Chandor-scripted and directed survival tale. While Marvel was predictably mum as Kevin Feige’s unit always is on casting matters, Marvel characters have a tendency to show up in other superhero movies, and I believe that is likely to be on the menu for Redford. It will be somewhat ironic for the patriarch of independent cinema to become a regular in some of Hollywood’s biggest studio blockbusters. Redford’s repped by WME |

They are the reason Marvel got his rights back. Sony had no idea what to do with the character

They ARE better than the Rainmi versions. That doesn't mean they're Marvel Studios quality, but they're certainly improvements. My biggest problem with them is that we just don't need any more ****ing origin stories. We don't need to know how Superman, Spidey or even Batman became who they are. Lesser characters, absolutely, which is why it worked so well in things like Ant-Man and GotG.

I think they were well made, but the stories sucked. Like I mentioned, Sony had no idea where to go with the character or storylines. It sounds like Marvel isn't doing any origin with him, just dropping him into the universe which is the right thing to do at this point

IMO, the thing that hits home is that this movie IS good storytelling, and nobody expected anything like that, especially considering the genre and how Avengers went down. Expectations were that it would be a superhero eye porn type of movie, but instead it ended up being a layered, nuanced story told that just worked and hit home with viewers.
Still can't believe it was the guys that did Park and Rec that directed this, lol. Fantastic job. |

I actually was talking about the Raimi/Maguire Spidey flicks. The new ones are The Amazing Spiderman. They're good but not as good as 1 and 2 from the 2000s.

Are they? Interesting. I really like Andrew Garfield as an actor and admittedly, don't care much for Tobey MaGuire.
That said, I just couldn't stomach watching yet another version of the same version of Spiderman that I've seen since I was a kid in the early 70's. I mean, come on. Quote:
A talking tree? A talking squirrel? A green female alien (Star Trek, anyone?). A human "plucked" from the Earth at a young age that's later thrust into a galactic battle? It sounds more like a super cheesy, cult 80's film than a gigantic blockbuster. I give all credit to James Gunn (a guy from St. Louis, BTW, that is SUPER cool). As for Ant Man, I remember him as a kid and always thought it was kind of cool but also ridiculous. That script was in development for seven years with Edgar Wright and Marvel finally said "Enough. You're out". Then, Peyton Reed (Who?) was hired, then Paul ****ing Rudd and Adam McKay REWROTE the ****er. How this movie even was made is insane. Evangeline Lily? The girl with the perpetual question mark on her face during LOST? Paul Rudd, the Apatow guy? Adam McKay of Anchorman fame? CGI Michael Douglas? It sounded like a disaster, a huge write-off. But, it worked. IMO, it's the best stand-alone Marvel movie, ever. |

Toby McGuire Peter Parker was more true to the character.
Garfield was fine, but they tried to downplay the geekiness of Parker and made him more into a hipster skater type.
