To this date, the only film I've seen that was an enjoyable 3D experience.

I think the point was to go see some badass giant robots fight some badass monsters. I think the point was to suspend disbelief and be taken on a ride.

The 3D in Avatar was great... but honestly Pacific Rim might have been my favorite IMAX experience of all time. The sheer scale of the film in IMAX was great. Awesome experience... it's what going to the movies should be. Haven't bought the DVD but I'm guessing it's just not going to be the same on the living room TV.

There are moments in Pacific Rim where it's cheesy and stereotypical genre stuff. But literally all the fights are fascinating. When Striker is running through the bay to help the other Jaeger, that shit's exciting. Saving the boat is exciting. Strutting down the road with a huge **** off boat to beat the monster? What more can you ask for in a summer blockbuster?

Avatar takes itself way too seriously. To quote Peter Griffin, 'it insists upon itself'. Everything's meant to have some deeper meaning, some comment on our society as a whole, and it's really transparent and hamfisted. Pacific Rim treats its subject matter with respect, but isn't up its own ass about anything. None of the characters are insulting to our intelligence. Their actions make sense. Their arcs are, ironically, not particularly deep. But the flick is overflowing with charm and a sense of style that isn't often found in the mess of cynical boring disasters we're treated to on the regular (Not necessarily stating that Avatar was a cynical boring disaster in this case)

So do you get upset when porno movies use the same clichés? I mean how many times have we seen that the pizza delivery man or plumber ends up having sex with the lonely housewife?

I call those two minutes into watching them. So predictable, it's ludicrous.

I liked it, but not nearly as much as I expected to. Probably would have been a lot better with the big screen IMAX treatment.
And really, I thought Charlie Hunnam was pretty bad. (Not that he had much to work with.) Just for scale, I thought Cloverfield was a hell of a lot better. That's disappointing. |

I just watched this movie for the first time in Blu-ray and could kick myself for not having seen it in Imax...
What a ****ing rocking-rolling ass-kicking hoot of a movie! And any pretentious ****ing artsy-fartsy type who has all sorts criticisms based on their film crit 101/human psych background can kiss my butt! |
