Do you mean tangibles to run an AirRaid in college or Andy's WCO?

You're going to first need an accurate QB. Size isn't as important as you can incorporate wide sets from your OL ala Leach and create nice throwing lanes for undersized QBs. Additionally, arm strength (NFL style from far has to sideline) isn't a requisite as the majority of your plays that call for deep outs or comebacks are going to either be on the near side or on the far side but be closer via PA, roll-outs, boots, or scramble drills. You do need a snappy, quick release as most ARs utilize hots off of outs, slants, whips, and 9s down the seam. You'd ideally like a QB who has a quick enough release to take advantage of that. You also need a smart QB that has an ability to understand fronts and probable coverages he's going to see based on D&D. Now, that is going to primarily be covered during the summer and during your game-planning/film breakdown, but you need a QB who is smart enough to understand what he's getting at the LOS and check into a play that utilizes a solid hot (If you have trips left, then Z slant vs overload right for example. Extremely simplified breakdown) Additionally for the AirRaid, you're going to ideally have a QB that is mobile a bit. While the AirRaid doesn't typically call for a lot of scrambling or designed runs from the QB, the route concepts run typically have vertical principles (Smash, 3 and 4 verts, etc). By having a somewhat mobile QB, you can scramble against C5 and pick up nice chunks of yardage. Additionally, you'll force teams to spy and play single high, which opens up a lot of different things offensively. Just a few things on the AirRaid from somebody who has already started drinking.

Do you see a difference with Andy's WCO? I'm not that familiar with his style. The QB described in the AirRaid sounds like a Russell Wilson type. Does the Reid WCO require additional height or arm strength? Last edited by Gadzooks; 01-31-2013 at 07:22 PM.. |

Reid's WCO is different than most WCOs (ala Bill Walsh, Childress, Shumur, etc) in that it primarily utilizes a ZB philosophy IIRC rather than the power scheme that most use. Additionally, Andy places an emphasis on deep RCs on much more plays than most traditional WCOs. (For example, a traditional WCO might typically run a slant/flat combo out of the I. Andy would incorporate a sluggo, corner, post, or post corner with the Z on the backside as opposed to having 2 slants).
The primary struggles IMO in trying to transition an AirRaid prospect to Andy's WCO would be the prospects accuracy (both down the field and in the short game), arm strength, and ability to sell the inside zone play and stretch play. Now, that requires A) A back worth respecting on the stretch play and B) A QB who is athletic enough to reach the 7 and sell the fake. Peyton Manning, for example isn't regarded as the best athlete in the world. However, that guy busts his ****ing ass to sell the stretch play and it looks identical to when he runs PA off it. Incidentally, the Chiefs have A) A back that can make teams respect his abilities as a runner off said stretch play, B) and OL that is athletic enough to get out and ZB and also can pass protect fairly well, and hopefully C) a QB that is athletic enough to get to the 7, can sell the stretch play and then possess enough competency to complete throws vertically and then eat up check downs once teams key on the deeper throws. To me, Geno fits this better than any QB available in this draft by far. As to answer your question about Andy's WCO wanting additional height/AS, I think he likes having strong armed QBs as they open up his running game after a few attempts down the field. As for height, I don't think so. IIRC, both Garcia and Vick were under 6'1 and that didn't hinder their production too greatly.

**** no. Alex has poor accuracy down the field and is a stop gap at best. IMO, we already know what his ceiling is. I don't want a Qb like that when Geno's available. Additionally, there is no QB that is going to be available IMO that has a high ceiling and fits our needs offensively.
