How similiar of QBs are Alex Smith and Russell Wilson?

Since everyone here loves Wilson so much.....

Admittedly Russell throws a better deep ball, but IMO they are fairly similar. Not flashy, don't throw for a ton of yards, use their feet to move the chains, protect the football and play smart.

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

If Lynch is THE heart and soul of the Seahawks, why don't teams put 8 in the box like they do against KC? Oh, that's right - they have a QB that can actually throw the ball to a WR downfield. Other teams respect Wilson. Alex Smith - no respect.

Tom Brady is great. What are you arguing? There is not a post on this board that I haven't referred to Tom Brady as an all-time great. God, you're dumb.

There isn't a post on this board that I said Russell Wilson is then 8th best player on his team.

Reading comprehension is not your friend.

Lynch had 1,200 yards and 12 TDs the year before Wilson got there with Tavaris Jackson as the QB.

Lynch had two 1,000 yard 7+ TD with Trent Edwards and JP Losman as the QB in Buffalo.

Jamaal Charles has several more productive years than Marshawn Lynch

how many championships do we have?
how many playoff wins?

Anyone who honestly thinks Marshawn Lynch is more important than Russell Wilson on that team ... well ... I don't know what to tell you (other than you're wrong).

It'd put them on equal status.

But Lynch is definitely the fireplug...

Hootie you have a man crush on Wilson. We get it. While the style of play between Wilson and Smith are no where on the same planet, the similarity is in what is asked of the two. Why the comparison is often drawn is because neither of which need to play exceptionally well for their teams to win. Both can have subpar games and it not affect their teams ability to win the game.

If Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers, Peyton Manning, Eli Manning, Phillip Rivers, Tony Romo, Matt Stafford, Tom Brady, Joe Flacco, Ben Roethlisberger, (etc.) have a bad game, an overwhelming majority of the time, their teams will lose. You cant say the same about Smith or Wilson....and THAT is why they are comparable.

Not all QBs can support a smash mouth offense. A good, effective run offense takes off a lot of clock. They grind you with long drives. They keep the defense off the field. Pass happy offenses like to gain yards in large chunks. Game managers can get them in small chunks which helps your defense with field position and to keep them off the field. Pass happy offenses often run no huddle, quick counts... game managers can get in a huddle and patiently take time off the clock before the snap. So I think your grouping there is way too broad. Flacco, Eli, and Russell Wilson fall into this category. Big Ben has at times too, as he's clearly significantly better with Laveon Bell in the lineup vs. without him.

It takes a special talent to be a good game manager. Again, the big difference is these guys are elite closers whereas Alex Smith has been very average. It isn't easy to support a strong running game. And the guys above have ability to flex out of game manager roles when their defense isn't getting the job done.

I totally disagree with the idea that it takes a "special talent" to be a good game manager. Alex Smith is a good game manager, and he sure as shit isnt a special talent. I just find it very hard to believe that quarterbacks who have demonstrated time and time again to have the ability to carry their teams cant be put in a position to excel at being a game manager.

Some quarterbacks can lead pass heavy offenses that can pickup large chunks at a time, yet you are saying that they may not be capable of the game manager type role where they pick up small chunks at a time? How does that make sense?

That's like saying someone is capable of sprinting, but that sprinter might not be physically able to jog.

I just really have to question whether or not the people commenting on Russell Wilson actually watch Russell Wilson play?

The dude is flat out PHENOMENAL.

The very definition of an elite NFL QB.

He does everything well. He's accurate, he has a great arm, he has great pocket presence, he's the best in the game at extending the play, his eyes are always downfield, he is great at running the ball, he is fantastic at read-option ... and most importantly, he's just a BORN LEADER AND WINNER.

Yet ...

People were saying his extension was a bad idea in the game thread yesterday and his contract was going to be "franchise crippling."

everyone always references Tom's playoff record and says "see! see! see!"

Russell is 6-1 and his 1 was the best playoff performance I've ever seen a QB play.

Alex Smith is not a good game manager. He is wildly inconsistent on third down. Apart from a few games this season, he has been horrendous at it. And he has I think 6 games in the last 2 years where he had a legit shot at closing the game and missed very badly.

I don't know how anybody can be a game manager if he can't convert third downs, which helps you control the clock. And what's the point of managing a game if you can keep the game close but then you suck at winning close games?

Alex Smith is a conservative QB who tries to be a game manager. Wilson, Eli, Flacco, and to some level Big Ben are at their best when they are asked to manage games. And that's not an insult to these guys. They won games with their teams in ways that I'm not convinced all QBs can do.
