Why people laugh at Creationists

Taking a lead from Killer Clown I thought I'd create a alternative thread to post some videos I like...

[EDIT New video here]

So on with the show:

Here's the Kent Hovind Theory:

"Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it.
Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many.
Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books.
Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders.
Do not believe in traditions simply because they have been handed down for many generations.
But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it."

I really don't have the time or the inclination to repeat discussions in this thread as each new believer enters and exits it. If you have any meaningful critiques of the "god of the gaps" concept, I would suggest that you watch the video already embedded in this thread. That would be a great starting point for you and you can state any points that you'd like to raise.
It's my assertion that you passed along a picture of a quote that someone made up, which not only mischaracterizes ancient Greek thought, but completely invents up a quote in order to advance some agenda.

If you have a problem with what I did, which was politely explain why that was wrong, then you probably just have a problem with historical accuracy and the truth. It has nothing to do with a god of the gaps concept or anything you want to pretend I'm arguing.

It's a summation of a passage of text attributed to Hippocrates regarding epilepsy. You can complain that the pic didn't contain the original Greek text but it's a petty, meaningless complaint. It's fairly obvious that the passage contains the same argument against assigning divine cause to poorly understood phenomena that Neil deGrasse Tyson referenced in his "god of the gaps" comment.

That's not what I'm complaining about. Is my argument too nuanced for you? I didn't think it would be, but maybe I overestimated you. Here's the point: The quote is made up. It also mischaracterizes ancient Greek thought.

Get it? Even if you like the sentiment, don't spread around a false quote. There's no need to be defensive about it. I'm not angry at you.

If it helps you think about this scenario, think if an evangelical posted a picture of Albert Einstein with the quote: "I am a deeply religious man. I love Jesus, he is great." In that scenario, what's your reply? It most likely is, for good reason, nearly exactly my replies to you in this discussion.

Wow this post is total iron. I hope the iron contained within this post does not escape my fellow readers.

Please keep this post away from magnets at all costs.

As I stated quite some time ago, the only part of the text in that pic that can't be taken directly from a translation of text easily attributed to Hippocrates is the last sentence.

The site http://www.humanistictexts.org/hippocrates.htm offers this translation:

It is thus with regard to the disease called Sacred; it appears to me to be nowise more more sacred than other diseases, but has a natural cause from which it originates like other affections. Men regard its nature and causes as divine from ignorance and wonder, because it is not at all like to other diseases. And this notion of its divinity is kept up by their inability to comprehend it, and the simplicity of the mode by which it is cured, for men are supposedly freed from it by purifications and incantations.

Get it?

You said that? No, I said that. See post 2254: "Hippocrates didn't say that. Someone of his school wrote something similar to the first part, but not the part about 'We will one day understand everything.' " The post you responded to in a bit of a tizzy.

Again, use the Einstein hypothetical.

No, I'd say that the last sentence of the pic is not expressed in that text I linked. The concepts in that first sentence are. Fairly clearly before the ellipsis.
