(CNN) -- A former Los Angeles police officer who police say has violently threatened his former colleagues shot at least two officers early Thursday, killing one, sparking a huge manhunt in Southern California, according to authorities.
Christopher Jordan Dorner, 33, is also wanted in a double slaying Sunday in Irvine, California.
The California Highway Patrol issued an alert Thursday morning urging officers in several Southern California counties to be on the lookout for Dorner after the overnight shootings.
Two officers in Riverside were shot, one fatally, police there confirmed to CNN. CNN affiliate KTLA reported another officer was shot in Corona, California.
Irvine police identified Dorner on Wednesday as the suspect in the February 3 deaths of Keith Lawrence and Monica Quan in Irvine.
Dorner also has made violent threats against other Los Angeles police officers, the agency said Wednesday.
"I will bring unconventional and asymmetrical warfare to those in LAPD uniform whether on or off duty," Dorner allegedly wrote in a lengthy letter promising retribution against the department, where he worked from 2005 until 2008. An LAPD source provided the document to CNN.
The letter writer claimed he was terminated for reporting excessive force by a fellow officer, and said his attacks were retribution for his termination, as well as a culture of racism and violence he says continues within the department.
He called the attacks against police "a necessary evil that I do not enjoy but must partake and complete for substantial change to occur within the LAPD and reclaim my name."
Los Angeles police warned people who encounter Dorner not to approach him, saying he is likely "armed and extremely dangerous."
"Our department is implementing all measures possible to ensure the safety of our LAPD personnel, their families and the Los Angeles community, and will continue to do so until Dorner is apprehended and all threats have been abated," police said in a statement.

The entire cabin burned to ashes. It's hot. And they're not going to just tromp through their evidence. Unless he has a twin bother, 99% sure what's left of him is in there.

I bet by the evening news tomorrow they will have a much clearer picture. So far they've reported anything and everything some of which was obviously false. Why freak out when they've stopped their verbal diarrhea and are finally taking their time to get it right.

A soft-jacketed bullet isn't going to spark at all and the spark from a FMJ round isn't going to be hot enough to ignite the fuel (and you'd have to hit the tank at just the right angle to make a spark at all). Moroever, the gas would have to be at exactly the right fuel/air mixture to actually ignite.

There are ways you can rig it to make it blow...and you can title a YouTube video about damn near anything you want. But in the end you just have to kinda turn your brain on here and think about it.

There isn't a catalyst. There isn't going to be an explosion.

EDIT: This isn't dispositive on it's own, but it's a hell of a lot more dispositive than a 14 second clip of a guy shooting something at something and making fire.

Yeah, I'm not buying the propane tank idea either. Would be 1 in a million. One of the main factors in gases burning is getting the right gas to air ratio as well as getting that perfect ignition.

I'm not putting my trust in the media. I'm putting in the guys that surrounded the cabin. Yeah yeah, the police there don't know shit, the LAPD shot at innocent people therefore all law enforcement in SoCal don't know what they're doing.

Yeah, that's where Mythbusters was trying to show that the stunt from Casino Royale wouldn't work in real life. That you aren't going to shoot the pistol that Bond used and pierce through a propane tank. A high powered rifle round will though. A full tank will blow out enough propane to flood a room when pierced. I have no idea where the tank was within the structure, or how full it was, or if the guy was even telling the truth when he said that there was one in there. But if the tank was in there, and it was reasonably full, it could have been pierced by weapons that were on scene. There are a number of ways that the resultant cloud of propane could have been ignited at that point. If you "turn your brain on and think about it" as you suggested, it's silly to just assume that the authorities torched Dorner based on one comment made by a passing cop.
