Gun owners - follow up to the poll on safes being required

The banning of "assault" weapons is right out. The banning of large capacity magazines is out. Registration of guns is out. Judging by the response in the poll... mandatory securing of a weapon when not in use is out.

I firmly believe that curbing gun violence in the US begins with education and the enforcement of existing laws. That said... is there any compromise to be had on the gun owner side of the argument?

If you are a gun owner... what would you be willing to compromise to find middle ground on this debate?

Yes it's stupid.....the argument for gun control is keeping people safe.

Everywhere they have banned guns there is much higher crime rate...and it's usually in big cities like NY LA CHI etc.

Most gun violence is from handgun violence, usually minorities in inner cities shooting eachother aka ganglike type violence.

Mass shootings w/ assault weapons is EXTREMELY rare...yet it's all over the news and on purpose to scare the shit out of people.....PLAIN N SIMPLE

Same thing w/ Jaws when the movie came out.....people (tourists) stopped swimming in the oceans for a period of time because they were afraid of sharks....it's just mass-mind control stupid shit. You have a better chance of falling in the shower and hitting your head and killing yourself than you do being involved in a mass shooting.

What is making a class available to n00bs taking away from the law abiding citizen? As for the giveback? A growing community of informed gun owners is surely something that would be of benefit to anyone.

I would call the expense and hassle of having to take a safety course to exercise your second amendment right a take away. The degree isn’t as severe as other proposals but it is still an added restriction on the law abiding citizen.
Not to imply there isn’t necessarily precedent, in order to get a hunting license you first have to pass a hunters safety course and present the card certifying that you passed it when buying your license.

We already have that in the form of increasing gun ownership and CCW applications.
I was thinking more along the lines of speeding up the waiting period for passing a gun safety course, kind of like how we can now bypass the background check with a valid CCW license.

No....more stupid laws and such is the reason you can't have a level headed conversation about guns.

What's a gun safe going to do? If you want one, fine go get one if it makes you feel better about guns being in the same house as your kids. If something bad happens where you need to access them quickly in another area of the house guess what? Youre ****ed.

What's ridiculous is everyone having gun safes. I mean what are you trying to solve here? More safety?

It's all about parenting.....THATS IT. I've known exactly how to operate, shoot, load, clean my dad's guns since I was about 9-10 yrs old. I've always known exactly where my dad kept his guns...but you know what?

He told me to never get them out unless he's around.

So you know what I did?

I never got them out unless he was around and i asked to get them out.


See how simple that is? We don't need gun safes, or other stupid shit. It all comes down to common sense and personal responsibility.

I was taught at a VERY young age that guns are not toys...they're dangerous weapons that can cause harm if used incorrectly.

I see the miscommunication. I stated the FFL dealer would be required to make the class available as part of the cost of the weapon... not that it would be a requirement of purchase.

The cost of the class, to the FFL, would likely be offset by the purchases of peripherals like safes, holsters, snap caps, defensive ammunition and the such.

The NRA will be thrilled to supply any gun owner with safety traing materials. They have an excellent publication for parents on home gun safety and children its free in print or online. Amazing! What you propose is already available with no government action

A gun safe could very well have prevented Newton.

If I need access to my guns in a quick manner, I will have no problem doing so. My safe is biometric meaning that I don't have to fumble with keys or combinations. I understand that not everyone has a safe like that.

As to what I am trying to solve here. There are many gun deaths due to accidental discharges. Requiring that arms be stored when not in use could go a long way in preventing the wrong hands (be it toddler, teenager, or anyone else).

I completely and totally disagree with you. It is not about parenting ALONE. It is about educating people on the use, safety, and storage of these weapons. It is all fine and well to bluster around and talk about how your pappy taught you all about guns and you wee such a well behaved kid (like every single one in the history of children have been) that you didn't need to be protected from yourself. While we have a right to own these guns... we should be responsible enough to learn about them and encourage others to do the same.
