Gun owners - follow up to the poll on safes being required

The banning of "assault" weapons is right out. The banning of large capacity magazines is out. Registration of guns is out. Judging by the response in the poll... mandatory securing of a weapon when not in use is out.

I firmly believe that curbing gun violence in the US begins with education and the enforcement of existing laws. That said... is there any compromise to be had on the gun owner side of the argument?

If you are a gun owner... what would you be willing to compromise to find middle ground on this debate?

I think the majority would be okay with tougher back ground checks with a possible waiting period to facilitate said check and of course increased gun education. I believe the latter is the key and one area that is over looked far too much. Instead of demonizing guns, perhaps educating people would allow them better understand something outside of what the lame stream media spoon feeds them. The overall gun ignorance is amazing to me with too many of the general populous.

I'll have no parts of magazine restrictions, any sort of ban that isn't already on the books and the whole Universal Background check that is just going to amount to a national database of gun owners.

I was thinking it would be interesting to have people rank Obama's executive orders to get a better sense of what people would be willing to compromise on. Maybe a poll could be started where people are asked to pick 15, 10, or 5 of them, or have a rounds type thing where the highest votes move on.

I would support efforts to improve the mental health problem. Dealing with crazy by locking crazy up and stop mainstreaming crazy so they feel better about themselves would be a start. Making it easier to get crazy committed would be good.

Gun control, insurance, baning guns, magazine size and all the rest of these stupid ideas does not address the real issue.

What exactly would gun control advocates be compromising? They don't stand to lose anything. How can there be compromise or middle ground when one side isn't actually giving up anything?

How about universal background checks for firearms in exchange for voter ID laws?

Then after the next election, we just go ahead and remove the background checks and every other unconstitutional gun law in existance.

Exactly right. The scary thing is that there are a bunch of people truly and completely ignorant of gun safety... and they own a small arsenal. I would love for safety courses to be more easily accessible to people. For a new gun owner, the cost of buying a gun AND paying for a lesson might seem imposing.

Perhaps a way that gun sellers can be more responsible would be to offer a short introduction to guns and safety course to new gun owners. It would allow them to demonstrate other products life safes, holsters, snap caps which would lead to an increase in revenue.

I don't see why it would be unreasonable to ask FFL dealers to provide that as a service.

that is my thinking as well. If there was any mandate to come forward about gun control, it could be the requirement of being trained on safety.

Maybe it’s just the circle of friends I hang out with but all of my shooting friends exhibit excellent range discipline. I used to think it was military training but there are plenty of us that aren’t veterans and exhibit the same quality of safety without it ever being a topic of discussion. So I think it’s really that we were all brought up around guns, learning from an early age how to properly respect a firearm.

Not everyone is cut out to be an instructor. I for one wouldn’t do it because I’m not very patient with dumbasses.
