Just a simple question that came to me on the drive home today. there are a lot of ways of looking at this and I expect that everybody will hash/rehash them ad nausea.

Is the US Government, in the way it's currently being run, fundamentally broken? If no, no response is really needed.
If yes, what are the potential LONG-TERM issues that stem from this? Not just the obvious nut-job answers of APOCALYPSE AND DEATH AND DESTRUCTION, though it's not unheard of for 'empires' to fall. Thoughts?

Also--if it IS broken, is there anything WE can do to fix it, considering that a LOT of the voting populace (and the population at large) are ****ing idiots? (and no, I don't just speak of those who agree/disagree with me--I'm talking about the ones that have given way to complacency.

like around 1900 or so before all the big government and religion took over. Back when we were a thriving country with the strongest middle class.

I think people that answer "no" should have to explain themselves. Everyone already knows our government is corrupt and broken as hell, and there are a million reasons why.

A lot of the problems originate in Congress, caused by both parties, and could be solved by them if they weren't so corrupt and power hungry.

For starters, I think we need Congressional term limits(2 term max).

Stop shitting all over the Constitution and our civil liberties with things like the Patriot Act, NDAA, warrantless wiretapping, domestic spying, domestic drones, etc.

Show some fiscal responsibility and balance the budget. Borrowing and spending is out of control.

Shrink the federal government. There are so many agencies and departments within the gov't that could be merged with others, or flat out cut. Take a look for yourself. http://www.usa.gov/Agencies.shtml

Exactly. They have the power to fix the problems, but won't do it because they're corrupt and want to stay in power for as long as possible.

IMHO, I don't see it as "broken" in the sense that it can be repaired to run better in its current form. It seems to be running to serve itself, primarily. Personally, I'd like to see it totally redesigned according to the original spec sheet. However, that's not going to happen.

I think we'll have to continue down the path we've taken, bickering about relatively small differences in the two parties in charge, and eventually experience the greatest internal war ever fought. I expect that the government (or governments) that emerge from that war are very likely to be much worse than what we have now.

I'm also guessing that that war won't happen during my lifetime.

We do this left vs right bullshit. Right now it's Obama's fault to every conservative, to every democrat it's Bush's fault. This is a constant cycle. always having an easy target to blame. But really, does it ****ing matter which side is president? no, the end result is always the same.
