Off Season Lets Talk Guns

Been a while since we had a guns n' ammo discussion.

Some of you are AR shooters Im sure. Im looking at a Colt 6920. Will be my first AR. Picked up a Glock this fall and really enjoy shooting it. Any feedback on that weapon?

Anyone else been in a buy/sell/trade mood with hardware?

Honestly, if it were my rifle, before I started changing cosmetic stuff, I would seriously look over the guts of the rifle.

Take a close look at the Bolt Carrier Group and make sure that the gas keys are properly staked. It should look like the first picture. http://m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=6993

Pull the bolt out and look for any pitting or cracks around the bolt face.

Then strip the bolt down and look at the extractor. The extractors tend to be the first part that wears out (should still last over 10,000 rounds) . Make sure it is good to go.

Take a look at the washers on the bolt.

Next, examine the trigger. Make sure nobody polished on it. AR 15 triggers are generally not case hardened all the way through. Bushmaster triggers are almost certainly not. That is bad because it means when someone starts polishing on it, they have removed all the hardness and left exposed soft metal. It is only a matter of time before it starts grinding away and you will get unintentional double fires, etc. That isn't safe or legal.

If you want to upgrade the trigger, Geissele sets the standard. They are easy to install. Several other companies make good triggers as well. The Wilson Combat TTU, Chip McCormick, and JP Enterprises triggers are all highly regarded. I have a Geissele (pronounced Guys-Lee) SSA-E. I love it.

Then after you are sure that all of the really important stuff that makes the rifle go is in working order, the very next thing you absolutely need to do is put a respectable sling on that baby.

I use the Ares Armor Husky sling, but the VCAS and VTAC slings are also highly regarded and perform similarly. A modern 2 point sling is a must.

AFTER that start thinking about fore ends and stocks.

If you want to replace the A2 stock with a carbine stock, you will need to also get a new Receiver Extension, Buffer, Buffer Spring, End Plate, and Stock.

I use a Magpul STR and I am quite fond of it. One of the advantages of an A2 stock is that it helps balance out the front of the rifle. I feel the STR performs similarly. The standard carbine stocks and the MOE and CTR and the Rogers Superstock are all very light and they tend to make the rifles they are on feel nose heavy. Adding a little bit of weight to the back isn't such a bad thing because it often times creates better balance. Coupled with a modern 2 point sling that you should have bought already, you are good to go.

As far as fore ends go, a lot of people are tempted to slap on a quad rail. That is usually a lot of extra weight. NAVY SEALS don't even use four rails for the most part. It is a lot more weight on a rifle length gas system with a long barrel. I would try to find a "modular" system where it is a tube that you can put a rail on anywhere you want. I use the Samson Evolution. Geissele just came out with a badass new rail and I would look into that, but it is pricey. Troy and Daniel Defense also make great rails. Nordic is often overlooked, and they make a good fore end that a lot of the 3 gun shooters use.

The free floating tubes/rails make a difference in accuracy. When I put my Samson free float on, it shrunk my groups by about half an inch at a hundred yards.

Also, read up on how to lubricate the AR 15. RUN IT WET. Like, really wet. Like, when you think you have enough lubrication on it, put on more. It will run dirty, and it will run forever as long as it is wet.

CLP, Froglube, Slip 2000, and 10w-30 motor oil are all great. Just use it generously on the bolt carrier.

I went and ordered a 6.5 Grendel complete upper, dies, brass and mags today from Alexander Arms. Been thinking about getting one for a long time now and decided to pull the trigger today. It was a toss-up between it and a 6.8SPC and since I already shoot a 264 and have 6.5 bullets I went this way. Now to see how long it takes get here from VA.

It would seem the Capital One boys didn't like my personalized credit card idea I submitted with my brother and I pointing our .500 Smith & Wesson's at the camera, with Pilots Peak in the background up at Cooke City. I just sent them an email to "see the light," or cancel the card.

Wait I thought Capital One was 'No Hassle'???? You should remind them they are violating their policy by hassling you!

I wonder if they'd approve a picture of my dog licking his balls on my card?

We will see what happens. I'm not one to take no for an answer.

To this I would add
4scopes.com
primaryarms.com
spikestactical.com

One thing - in a post-apocalyptic setting, I might consider lubing my rifle with motor oil, but short of that......

Here's an old post summarizing my AR misadventures:

I'm on my third red dot, my third handguard and my third muzzle device. In the junk drawer are a pistol grip flashlight holder that just got in the way when I shot the rifle at the range (around $150), and a couple of bipods. I replaced my original flash suppressor with a compensator, which is kind of silly for an AR since it barely kicks. Looked cool, but made the rifle twice is loud and blasted out that cat piss/ammonia smell sideways which tended to annoy people around me. Ended up replacing it with a different flash suppressor, and I'd have done well to have left the original on it (total money wasted on that about $100). I bought a cheap Bushnell red dot ($80) when I bought the rifle (entry level rifles won't come with sights or optics), then got a sort of mid-range one (Lucid HD7) that was decent, but not great. In hindsight, I should have bypassed the Lucid and saved my money for the totally badass (but very expensive) Trijicon ACOG that I have now. Between the Lucid sight, a magnifier and the mount for the magnifier, I dropped around $350 and it's all in the junk drawer now. I got a nickel boron bolt carrier group that was another big waste of money (around $125) - I reverted to the original one that came with the rifle).

Anyway, after all that, I now have the following additions to my rifle. Some of them are unnecessary, some are more functional and useful than others, but none of them hurt anything.

Sampson Evolution free-float handguard (free floats do not contact the barrel at all and improve accuracy)
Magpul ACS stock which is more comfortable for shooting
Grip Pod combination grip/bipod (sturdy, reliable, used extensively by combat troops)
Trijicon ACOG 4x32 battle scope (again, sturdly, reliable, troop favorite, doesn't need batteries)
Vortex flash hider
Magpul BAD (battery assist device) lever
Magpul trigger guard
Giessele SG3 trigger (excellent trigger upgrade)
Single point sling with mount
Mako pistol grip
Magpul 20 and 30 round magazines

For starting out, I highly recommend Magpul magazines. They seem to be pretty much everybody's favorite. No need to **** with the flash hider. Don't scrimp on optics - I'd get nothing less than an EOTech to start, but they are pricey. Free float rail probably isn't necessary, but you should at least replace the standard handguard with a quad rail so you can mount a grip/bipod. I love the ACS stock, but again, it's not that big of a deal. Leave the bolt carrier group alone. Trigger upgrade was a pain in the ass, but I love love love the new trigger.

Buying the rifle is only half the fun - slowly accessorizing it is a blast, but be smart about it less you end up with a ton of crap you'll wish you'd never bought. In the end, I initially paid around $700 for the rifle. As it sits right now, it's got about $2,000 worth of upgrades on it, purchased over the course of a couple of years, with probably $600 worth of crap that I'll end up selling on eBay if I ever get around to it.
Here's where I'm at now:

Picked up a smith and wesson sd9 today for about $350 out the door, and a marlin model 60 yesterday for just under $200.

Not the greatest deals in the world, but not panic prices either.
