We just got a postcard from the IRS at work. It basically is informing employers that if average wages are less than $50k per year, the company can get medical insurance subsidies.

Pretty freaking outrageous.

I heard yesterday on the radio that due to a projected budget shortage they are thinking about going to a 4 day week or maybe even unpaid furloughs for state employees. And this is supposed to be one of the strongest states economically!

So in this thread Taco John gave a real life example of how idiotic government policies directly influenced a decision he made regarding how much to pay someone, and Orange, who knows nothing about Taco John or his company, insists that the decision was not made in that manner.

It's pretty clear that Orange has never hired anyone.

These types of decisions are made every day. I know that whenever I hire anyone I have a great of latitude regarding what I offer as a starting salary. The decision is based upon a lot of things, including education, experience, and how badly I think I'll want to retain that employee in the future.

This is what happens when you get guys like our current President with no practical experience, and you put them in charge of making policy. They think they know everything, when in fact they don't know what the hell they are talking about.

I could answer that question easy, but you wouldn't accept the answer - you said "it was in the budget" doesn't cut it. But that's the simple answer. My boss gave me budget, and I didn't play any games with it. I didn't care to wrangle. I just offered the amount and the person accepted it.

Now this being said, you may have had a point if the savings from any negotiation that I did was retained in my department. I would have been incentivized to low ball the guy and use the extra dollars for other projects. But I wasn't going to see that extra money.
