After the fact - KC's smoking ban, three+ years later
So, now that we have had time to adjust and absorb the smoking ban, how do you feel about it? Was it a good thing, a bad thing, still an unholy infringement on our "civil rights", or do you just not care one way or another?
Poll to come. |

Love it. Going out to bars in KC is much more enjoyable now and now I don't stink like cig smoke when we head back to the hotel. We only come down about 6 to 7 times a year we have enjoyed it more when we are in town.

As a smoker, I voted "don't care," but overall it's a good thing. It sucks having to step outside this time of year, but if I don't like it, I still have two options. Plenty of bars here have created outdoor smoking areas, many with heaters.

It has saved me money. I don't go out near as often as I did pre ban.

You've decided to not go out because of the smoking ban? I find that interesting. Is it more that you can't stand not being able to smoke while having a drink, or just are in disagreement with the ruling?

Honestly it was a combination of things. Saying it was only the smoking ban would be not entirely accurate. .Much of it is that I’m just older and don’t function the day after a night of play like I once did. Additionally is a great deal less expensive to have a couple of friends over for cocktails than it is to go out. But I do remember being pretty ticked when an old lady was barking at me because cold air came through the door as I wondering out into a sleet storm. The waitresses I know do say the lost business has cost them as does the former owner of my preferred pub that had to sell his business. Did the smoking ban cost him his dream of self sufficiency? I don’t think that is the main issue but, he would argue it was the tipping point. Going outside to smoke really isn’t that big of a deal it is just another one of those let’s stick it to the other guy things that while popular now, just rubs me the wrong way. I have no doubt there are people that dislike the odor of cigarettes much the same as I don’t care for old lady perfume. I see it as the same thing as NY city deciding how large of a soft drink they are willing to let me purchase. That is just not the kind of government I’m looking for.

When this vote was going on, there was a ton of emotion about it around town. I remember being at a 54th Street Grill and Bar one afternoon, and I asked the bartender how she liked it. She was pissed about it, giving the whole civil rights angle. She was also absolutely convinced that establishments such as the one she worked at would suffer, some critically so. As it stands today, it would appear that MORE people go out to me, as these places are constantly packed.

They followed up between 6-12 months later, all of the bar owners that were bitching before loved it. All of them said they were selling more drinks because people were subbing more drinks for going outside to smoke. |

heck, I smoke and I prefer a smoking ban. It seems to make me sick and always coughing up shit whenever I smoke inside (very rarely, maybe only sometimes when I've been drinking). It's really no trouble for me to step outside for a butt. Plus it does bother non smokers, people shouldn't be bothered by other people's bad habits and that goes for me too.

I don't like my clothes smelling like smoke when getting home from the bars.
But then again I don't think it's a deterrent on whether I go out or not. I just don't like being engulfed in the shit. I don't smoke cigs unless I'm drunk and someone wants to offer me one to chill with them on the bar patio outside or something...I don't mind that. Can't remember if I've ever bought a pack for myself though. Just not into it...don't see how people get addicted to it...I think I'm just one of those who couldn't get addicted even if I tried.

But I see your dumbass is trying to troll. There isn't a body of govt/law/ordinance that you never disliked. You like getting groped by a bunch of pervs at the airport because the govt is telling you that they're fighting Al-Qaeda while the justice dept allows these assholes to get on the plane.
